Spare Tire Storage on a truck's hood...

Is it legal/safe/smart to store a spare tire on your hood...? I know a lot of Rovers do this...I am currently planning for a flatbed camper and don't know if I can swing a rear tire carrier...

Because on most trucks it looks like crap. Not to mention reduces your field of vision and adds stress to the hood. The rovers you see with a spare on the hood were designed that way.

A spare tire on the hood only really works on a LR Series for two reasons:

(1) the bottom of the windshield is a far amount above the flat hood surface (due to the vents at the windshield base).
(2) old skinny tires didn't stick up that high. I won't put a spare on the hood of a Defender unless I was running skinny tires. A fat tire blocks a bit much view:

Compare that to a Series 1 with a skinny tire that in no way blocks your view:

Also realize those old Series Rovers generally weren't traveling fast enough that the tire on the hood screwing up aerodynamics matter. The amount of wind noise that it would generate on the hood of modern truck at highway speeds would be bad.

Makes good sense...thanks...

I don't care what it looks like...I know only Rovers make it look good...just need a place to carry a spare or two...looks like rear tire mount is the answer

Your hood probably isn't strong enough to safely hold a spare tire.

Besides looking ridiculous, I am pretty sure you would have to make a whole new hood to take the weight (particularly the dynamic load over bumps) and opening the hood to check the oil would be a royal pain. Not to mention how you would explain decapitating those in front of you if you ever happened to rear end someone. There has got to be some where better to store it.
