So my Christmas present to myself this year was another Jeep, a 2006 TJ Rubicon. Naturally I had the itch to get the tires dirty. I searched the interwebs for any organized rides going on this weekend, nothing within reasonable driving distance for a day trip(I don't have winter camping gear, although I probably would have been ok with what I have with the current temps).
So I loaded up my gear Friday night with the plan to head to WV in the morning. My first destination would be the Tuscarora trail aka the State Line trail. When I arrived to the trail head it was still dark ( I like to get an early start) with the reputation of this trail and being alone I decided to leave it for another day so I headed towards some places I am familiar with, Dolly Sods was the next stop.
Sunrise at a "Scenic Overlook" on the new 55/48 near Moorefield, WV
Nothing too eventful on the ride through Dolly Sods, some shots along the way;
First encounter with snow in my new to me Jeep, later in the day the temps were in the 60's
After passing through Dolly Sods I headed for the infamous Canaan Loop. Sorry no pics. It was muddier( is that a word?) then I have ever seen. There were a lot of hunters in the area so I did not do any hiking. I fueled up in Davis and headed west through Thomas heading for the Canyon Rim trail (FR 18) on my way I noticed a path I had not noticed before, it was a railroad bed converted to a trail.
Barely visible with my iPhone camera, You can see Table Rock (accessible from the Canaan Loop) from the Canyon Rim trail (FR 18)
There were a few nice looking spots to camp along the road. I was getting to be that time of day to head back to the pavement and start making my way home. One last icon to pass by on my way home, never been here in the winter before;
That is all for now...hope to get back out somewhere this week
