I purchased a 1998 Montero this past week and it seems I have an ac problem. It appears the AC compressor needs repaired and the local Mitsubishi dealer Quoted me 850 dollars for the compressor and 176 dollars in labor. Lets not forget 36 dollars for refrigerant. I can try and fix most things but I dont mess with AC. Even so am I wrong in thinking that the price is absurd? What should I be paying? Thanks in advance.

New compressor on my 98 was about $300. $176 in labor is not outrageous. $36 for freon is a steal.

There is a 98 in the local salvage yard, let me know if you want me to check out the compressor and ship it to you. And the labor isn't too bad to do yourself, it's nothing like the old r12 systems where you can do more damage to the air by venting it out. Most local A/C shops will charge far less than the stealership for better quality work.
The vehicle is new to me so with new cars come new sounds. I noticed that when activating the ac I could hear a slight rubbing sound. The dealer mechanic pointed out that you could see the clutch operating out of line. Almost look like it was wobbling like it was about to spin or fall off. They advised for me to replace it. The system gets cold but the visual aspect makes me nervous. Am I over reacting? I was going to drive from Georgia to Pennsylvania friday but I', not doing that trip not till it gets fixed. Well I did get the compressor fixed. I found a local shop to replace the compressor, dryer, and expansion valve with all new parts for a little less than 600 dollars. Half of what the dealer wanted to charge. They even gave me a warranty for 2 years on parts and labor. I think with my limited experience I was intimated with the evacuation process and recharging the system. Along with not having the tools to do it. Thank you for the help everyone.
