Stock Suspension Opinions Please

Hi All,

I don't often create posts but do comment from time to time. My 01 Reg Cab is basically bone stock. It has Helper Springs in the back and everything else is stock. I have 265/75R16's on it currently and for my purposes, I don't have rub or any clearance issues. Overall, it rides pretty bad with the short wheel base and the cheap Napa shocks on the back and OEM Toyota shocks in the front. That being said, I do not want to lift the truck, I just don't have a need for that but my shocks are starting to leak. All 4 actually, same age roughly 70k on them. They still work as they should but I'm going to fix them within a week or so anyway. My current front hardware is really rusty. My frame has been done and I just had to do my oil pan...15 yr old truck. I'm going to replace the whole Strut assembly at this point and I've got a few options and want some opinions.

Option 1:
Local Pick and pull has some TRD assemblies. I have yet to see them but if they are in good shape and not leaking, I may throw them on and see if they change the ride at all. 150.00 for both. If they are leaking than I'm really not saving by going this route. Though I would get the progressive spring for my new struts.

Option 2:
Get the Monroe pre-assembled units. Roughly 100 bucks per side. No muss, no fuss. Toss them on, get it aligned and drive away.

Option3:
Wait and find a set of "takeoff" struts from someone putting on a lift kit. Might take weeks though and lots of intraweb searching. Not really leaning in this direction.

My gut is to just get the Monroe's. Hope for at least 50K before the shock blows and maybe then I'll have more cash or have sold the truck anyway. I've really outgrown it but still making it work. Ready to get back into a Tundra...

Just looking for feedback. Remember, keeping stock height, stock ride characteristics are fine, it's a truck not a race car. I use it as a truck. It sees trailers, firewood, furniture, camping gear, bicycles it's truly a utility vehicle for me. The Napa cheap shocks have been great on the back for 70k. Rides pretty bad but they work like they should all the time. I can bomb a rough dirt road and not have any problems.

Thanks,
Jorge

option 2 ... I've spent enough time at local pick n' pulls looking for that diamond in the rough , and fighting of the unwashed masses to do so . You're time is worth more than whatever you might save from options 1 and 3 ...

Hi All,

New bits are in and it's riding a little nicer than what was in there. I'm trying to figure out if I need an alignment. I did not lift the truck at all and it's not pulling or anything but (it may be in my head) the steering wheel doesn't seem quite as straight on as it was. If the general opinion is I should get an alignment, I'll let the new springs settle in a bit and do it next week.

What's everyone's opinion? Alignment or leave it be?

Thanks,
jorge

I'd agree with waiting for a bit until things settle out and then going to get it aligned. Chances are the ride height and geometry has changed a bit with the fresh suspension and an alignment would do you good.

That's the plan for next week I think. Everything is still riding well and I have a lead on a truck camper to jam in the bed. May have to get some Timbrens now. Someday, maybe a build thread.

I vote for getting an alignment too, unless you are about to change the suspension again and add a truck camper... then I would wait. =P
