Strongest rear tire carrier for JK

I have an RTT that allows rear entry on my JK, and it's time for a rear bumper/tire carrier combo. My intention is to use the Frontrunner rear-wheel steps to get in and out of the RTT and I weight about 230lbs. Any idea if any of the available brands are heavy-duty enough to accommodate my rotund rear end climbing up and down the rear tire?

I really like the idea of raising my rear tire (to make room for a Thule box), strapping a grill to the spare tire, and avoiding the RTT ladder. I just don't have room for a grill or ladder inside my little 2 door. I still have 33s on the rig and don't plan to go larger then 35s.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Like many I have the Teraflex Hinged Carrier & Adjustable Spare Tire Mount. I've never seen a published weight limit on it but I've stood on top of it (200 pounds) along with a 134 pound 37" wheel/tire.
For extended trips I carry a 5 gallon Jerry can strapped to it along with the trasharoo.
I chose the rear bumper delete from EVO along with their D ring mounts:

At SEMA Teraflex introduced the Alta Cargo Rack that attaches to the carrier, due in January. It might hold your Thule box & grill, but would likely prohibit climbing in from the back. Published weight spec on the rack is 75 pounds.

Might want to consider new rear springs once you've added all the weight.

Good luck!!

I have had my Rockhard rear bumper for 7 years. It easily supports the spare, hi-lift jack and 2-5 gallon gas cans. I have never adjusted the hinge point or the latch. It does not rattle. I leave it open loaded for hours without problems.

Check it out. Also made in the USA.

Instead of climbing over your spare tire, and the potential that has for falling, why not just strap a telescoping ladder to the spare tire. Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Telescopic-T...553480_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1478624521&sr=1-1

Then at camp, just swing your tire carrier out of the way, setup the ladder, and enjoy easy ingress egress. :)

Thanks for the info everyone. That is the ladder that I am using (same family anyway). It's quite a bit shorter than the ladder that shipped with the tent. I hadn't thought of strapping it to the spare tire. I have a JeepKitchen coming. Maybe I'll have my HVAC buddy make another compartment on top of it that it just big enough to slide the ladder into.

I've also been eyeballing the AEV rear tire setup. It looks like it would split the weight between the tailgate and the AEV hinge. That TerraFlex rig looks pretty cool, but I'm fighting to lower my center of gravity. The RTT and Rack are pretty heavy and I am sure aware of that weight up there.

I have a VKS rear bumper with carrier. The spare swings with the tail gate. Check them out on line.

As mentioned above Rockhard makes a great product.

I really like LoD's new Destroyer Rear Bumper system...

An update....though I really (in my heart) wanted the LOD Destroyer setup because it looks awesome, I went with the Teraflex HD and installed it a couple of weekends back. That thing is hella solid! I think I'll add the Alta rack in a couple of months.

Interesting fact. If you install the Teraflex HD rear-tire mount system and read the instructions (like a good boy), be aware of one thing. I had previously installed a gas shock on my rear gate to hold it open. The Teraflex instructions didn't tell me to "first, disconnect any after market shenanigans that you may have previously installed" and once I had removed the factory gate hinges, I spent an hour trying to figure out why none of the holes would line up. "GXd damXXd uselesss piece of shXt" was a phrase that my wife could hear in the house. Finally, it dawned on me that the gas shock was pushing the gate left once the factory hinges were removed. Yeah, I know...I'm kindof a dummy.

Other than that, the Teraflex HD is a great piece of kit.

How about inside. My XJ and ZJ had the spare inside. With my rack on the JK everything I want to get at quickly is there on the back.

When I was waiting for the Teraflex HD hinge, I had my spare 35 KM2 on the roof rack. My Jeep kitchen took all the space in the back of the Jeep and I couldn't fit the spare inside. But, I'm in the process of moving all my cooking gear to the trailer. It would be cool if there was a spare mount bracket available for the inside of a 2-door JK.

Glad Im not the only one who wants this mount.

My back couldnt take the spare on the rack.

With my XJ and ZJ the spare was on the inside but i wanted it on the outside.

With my JK I want the spare inside as all the stuff I want to get to easily is is outside,

Im working on the tire mount.
