Summer's Swan Song...

Well, all good things must end...My eleven week vacation was soon coming to an end. I needed to get back to work and my daughter needed to head to preschool. What to do? We packed up the car and headed for Colorado. The plan was to see some new things along way and then eventually meet my sister in Steamboat Springs. Our weather window was perfect. Well, hot and dry...The smoke from California fires was constantly in the sky however. Temperatures were nice because we were mostly up in the high country.

Yes, you can see a few No Tresspassing signs on this property...We started our travels with a stop at the Skinwalker Ranch. If you are into UFOs, Aliens, and other crazy stuff; check out the Skinwalker Book. My wife has read it a few times. She wanted to see the place for herself. This is the closest we got...

Our next stop was heading down to Echo Park in Dinosaur National Monument. The road is spectacular...

The campground at Echo Park is great. We are not into campgrounds that much but this one was spectacular...The crickets were crazy loud at night...

The views abound here...Canyon country is spectacular! Lilly was trying to spot a hawk that was calling from the far bank.

Good times!

The road led us to Whispering Cave...nice eye candy...A fun, quick stop!

Lilly loved to "read" the history of the ancient petroglyphs the Fremont Indians pecked into the walls a 1000 years ago.

There was an old settlement that we stopped to explore...

Major water crossing! The clear spring provided water for the settlement...

More to come...

Love the photos. These trip reports are an inspiration. It's fun to see others traveling with their kids in tow. It's work but well worth it.

Lilly has a blast! My wife and I are amazed that she just loves the outdoors! Thanks for the kind words...

The old settlement was impressive! Sold out to the park in the 60s...The property showcased that I think they were doing quite well ranching in the middle of nowhere! They had a ranch in excess of 2000 acres!

Nicest, abandoned ranch house I have seen...

The high grasslands were awesome! Little dry this year..

We made our way to the Flat Top Wilderness! Impressive and sad what a forest fire can do...

Great scenery abounds...

We drove the Flat Top Scenic Byway...A great, beautiful drive. Ran into this store in Yampa, Co...Love it!!!!

We made our way to Steamboat Springs and found a great place to camp. The Boat was dry too...The Yampa River was closed to fishing due to the low water and warm temperatures. We went for some hikes and soaked up the hotsprings in town...

Louise made some nice dinners...No bugs, sunsets, and mountain views abound...

Lilly wanted to end the summer with a bang. Sparklers out and so too the stars...

Summer of 2012 will remembered for how dry it was...how smokey it was...Will things change? Not sure but we are looking forward to fall and the call of the southern Utah desert. Until then...
