Superwinch S9000 help

I have this winch on my jeep. Bought it used a year or so ago and it has performed great. Was working at my brothers house last weekend and it would freespool, unwind under power but would not power in. I am guessing new solenoid, but before I drop the $100 or so, I thought I would check to see if there is anyone with experience on this particular issue.

Thanks,

John

If it has not been used in a while, the solenoids can stick. Try a gentle tap or two with a small hammer on the solenoid to see if it will start working. Worth a try before you buy a new one.

Don't just jump to the conclusion that it's the solenoid. I had an issue with the toggle switch on my winch that really masked itself as a bad solenoid. It rang out just fine with a meter but apparently wasn't allowing enough juice to pass to latch the solenoids. Scratched my head for a long time trying to figure it out. A $5 switch from the local Aubuchon and I was back in business. You should make sure all the connections are clean and tight too. Get a meter and start checking it out.

This is a fix right up my alley... well, except for the "gentle tap" and "small hammer" part... :smiley_drive:

Seriously, thanks, this is what I was looking for...and the other responses as well. It seems a shame to replace a $100 solenoid when it is a guess that is what it is. So I appreciate it and will hopefully get to it in a day or so.

Not sure what type of solenoid the S9000 uses but it may be possible to fix your existing part. One of my Warns had a solenoid that was closing but not making good contact. The unit was riveted so I just drilled them out, opened it up, dressed the contacts, 4 small screws and a little silicone sealer and all has been well ever since. Can't hurt to try, worst case is you have to buy a new one anyway.

Hoping to tear it open this weekend and see what's up. Will circle back then with, no doubt, more questions.

Thanks for the help.

A quick follow up to this thread. After some more research I decided the best first step was to replace the solenoids. I have done this on a warn in the past, so knew it would just be a matter of matching the wiring as I went (don't need to understand it, just mimic :))

I went to superwinch's website and they had the appropriate solenoid available for... $107 each!!! ummm, hmmm... maybe time for a new winch. After searching, I found the exact same superwinch part on Summit Racing's site for $25 each. $50 is worth the risk to me, so I ordered.

Reassembled the winch yesterday and viola! working winch!:wings:

I also ordered a new hand controller, but the plug does not match. After more research I realize that the hand controller currently in use (very cheapola) is an ebay piece, that included a new plug/outlet combo. I will be circling back and ordering a new outlet at some point so I can use the correct controller, but have not done that yet.

Thanks for the help and advice.
