Tacoma Camping

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a 2nd gen Tacoma and have gotten into light offloading and camping. I enjoy the overland mindset and freedom.

I have a double cab short bed with a Leer shell and sleeping in the bed is a problem, its just too short. My wife would rather be off the ground and we would be very comfortable in the bed if we could close the tailgate. Since we can not I am trying to figure out a way to keep the elements while we are sleeping.

Any other ideas? We are trying to be somewhat budget sensitive. What would be an easy way to attach a tarp to the back?

That will work. I have something similar for the back of my 4runner. I like it. I got my from Sierra Trading Post or Campmor.

For the short bed, that tent is probably your best bet. Zip it up and you're fully enclosed.

The easy way to attach a tarp to the back is to drape it over the back of the shell and run bungy cords from the corners down to the wheel wells. Support the other end of the tarp with poles. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/123305-DIY-Awning-or-Tent-Poles You won't be enclosed that way, but you could drape hammock mosquito netting over the hatch to keep the bugs out.

Get a RTT....Eezi-Awn RTT 1400 over a custom raised bed. Or you could mount your RTT directly to the top of the canopy...

I used a DAC tent for several years. I made drawer system and then laid a board across the open drawers to create a long enough bed to sleep. If you don' t have a platform, then you have to take everything out of the bed at night. My Dac leaked a little in rain where the tent touched the rear glass (like touching the inside of a tent)
