Temp Gauge Inside Compass

Tried to do a search on this but haven't found anything.
The temp gauge (needle gauge) on my Gen2 never goes past the halfway point. Never shows it overheats weather I'm cruising down the freeway or if I'm parked with the engine running in 100+ weather.... When the truck is cold it reads cold...as it warms up the needles goes up normally until the halfway mark.
The digital temp gauge within the compass however is a different story.
As soon as I'm standing still with the truck running the temp goes up really fast.
Example. If its 60 outside and I'm cruising down the freeway the temp will read 60 as long as I'm moving.
But if I pull over for more then a minute the temp starts to climb. After 10 minutes of being parked with the truck running it will read 100-120 depending on how hot it is outside....
The other day it was 42 outside coming back from the local renfest and we pulled over to eat some lunch in the truck. After 15 minutes the gauge said it was 125 degrees. After 5 minutes of driving it went back down to 42.
In the summer it would read 140s and even the AC would shut off at this point until i drove around the temp dropped ( the AC shutting off is the only sign that it's actually getting hot )
Yet the needle temp gauge next to the fuel gauge never goes past the halfway mark , engine never smokes , never any bubbling noises.... never a sign of actual overheating.
Is the temp sensor for the compass temp gauge located in a place where the heat of the engine will effect it ?

Thanks in advance.

Sensor is behind the front bumper, near the AC condenser, if you remove the front grill you can likely read and move it. it's probably somehow managed to get itself too close to the radiator and is reading the radiated temperature from the running engine.

Temp gauge

I have the same problem with my dash temp gauge. So I installed a normal gauge and it reads properly. Cannot explain why the dash one doesn't go above halfway in any weather be it hot or cold. Maybe someone on here has useful knowledge on it.

The digital temp gauge is for ambient temp. I have the same issue where it climbs as soon as the car stops. From what I've noticed, the engine compartment of the Montero runs hot. I can always feel heat coming off of it. But the coolant temp gauge for me never moves unless I'm off roading and pushing the car in 4Low in difficult terrain.

The dash gauge not going above half is not a problem... that's the engine temperature, the thermostat and radiator work in conjunction to keep the engine at it's operating temperature... (180-210 degrees depending on thermostat)

the other gauge is simply for outside temps, nothing to do with the engine, just an accessory.

Is this right? Minimum of 180 degrees is that Fahrenheit or Celsius. Am I wrong in thinking that if it were Celsius the engine is boiling at just 100 d c, could this not start to crack heads etc... I've heard this on this forum, my electric fan kicks in at around 90 d c.

Fahrenheit.
