Tepui Ladder Question

So, I've had my Tepui Tents for about a year now, and, unfortunately, have nowhere near enough nights in them.

With that being said, Something was pointed out to me this summer that has kept a question in my mind.

When I set up the tent, the ladder does not work out nicely to be locked in on every step. If I stretch the ladder out to lock every rung, the ladder is far too "flat" to climb safely. If I don't extend the bottom sections all the way, it collapses strangely as I climb down. As a result I often leave the top sections collapsed, and the tent sort of "floats" on these partially extended sections. This means that the ladder isn't really holding any weight.

My description might not be great, but hopefully some of you will get what I mean. Is this normal? Acceptable? should I be building some sort of clamp or something to hold the weight on the top rung that is solid? Am I risking tent damage?

any thoughts?

no, i think you are not setting it up correctly. i did that at first till i figured out the ladder can do half steps also. its the top steps that can be collapse at different heights, so start there.

Yes it sounds like you are doing it correctly. I use my ladder the same way. I extend it out fully to open the tent and lock out all the rungs. I then collapse the ladder starting at the top rung and each rung after that to get it to the desired height. As was mentioned there are "stops" at midpoints when collapsing rungs that allow for more adjustability. If you're tent is "floating" like you describe, you can either change the angle of the ladder to eliminate that section that "floats", or extend out one more rung and adjust the ladder angle to where it feels like you're getting solid support.

My tent sits atop my F150 at about 7'. I do not use all the rungs on my Tepui ladder. I use Velcro's "One Strap" to keep the top 2 moveable rungs collapsed to the top rung. I use the 1" wide One Strap. Since I started using this, I've had -0- issues setting up. (I wrap the top 3 rungs together - they never move)

I've done the same thing using a couple pieces of cord to hold the top rungs together. Works well so far.

round wire lock pin

I'm having the same problem with my Tepui tent. I thought about drilling a couple small holes in the ladder and locking it in place with something like this...round_wire_lock_pin.jpg

Really glad I read this. I thought I ran into the same issue. Will have to play with it using your method Adam.
