Texas TJ's 99 D1 Project

Well I have now had my Rover for Two Months and have got most of the POs Mistakes Fixed!

Now on to my Project work! I really want to keep The Rover mods simple this spring to save money for my Trip to the West Coast this summer.

Im collecting spare parts and setting up for and internal racking and storage system for allot of Climbing, Camping, and Fishing gear. Im Going to put a shelf on the rear door for cooking and take out half of the rear seat to fit a cooler or refrigerator. I Found a pump for the big water cooler size jugs at Lowes and that will end up being my water supply.

I am not going to lift the Rover this year so my first concern is for some rock slider. After that I would like to get a set to BFG ATs or Goodyear DuraTrac's in 225/75-16 or 235/75-16. The PO and put 255/70 R16's on it but they rub like hell and I'm wanting a little more aggressive tire. After that I would like to look into a good Front bumper (ARB or RoverTyme).

I would like a SD style Roof rack and have talked to some people about them but I just don't Think Ill be able to swing that before I hit the road and June.

Other than the dent in the door the body and the interior are in close to new condition. The rear sun roof dose like (my dumb ***** opened it) so I think I'm just going to Silicone it shut.

I would love any help or words of wisdom on my build and look for a right up on the trip planner near the start of March!.

you should do the "camel trophy" cut and run 245/75s or 235/85s. like this:

and here is a truck with stock suspension on 235s. i think the 245/75s would look better on stock suspension.

You might consider new shocks and springs. I'm not wanting to start the RTE vs OME thread, but shocks and springs were a huge improvement on my D1 over the stock springs. Ride and handling were both much improved. Plus you get the added benefit of ability to put in a little bigger tire. Added ground clearance. First mod I ever did was shocks and springs. Just sayin'

texastj, ignore Jason and Tim. Jason is still on a high high from a good birthday and Tim is just, well... Tim. He's from Alabama too, so that may have something to do with it. Neither of them know anything about rovers whatsoever.:coffeedrink:

But seriously, they're advice is good, but irrelevant nonetheless if you are dead set on not lifting it. If you are, listen to Michael.

Is there a reason you aren't looking to lift it? If you're going to be buying new tires, there's no better time to pull the trigger on some suspension upgrades. Even a simple 2" is easy, affordable, and makes a world of difference both on road and off.

edit: I figured it out. Tim also has a white disco, it's lifted with a RTE bumper. So he's probably trying to make you more like him. As for Jason, well, I'm just bitter towards him. He has a TDI.

I'd figure out what your plans for the rig are and start from there. What you plan on will determine what kind of lift, how stiff springs, etc.

I'd figure out the plans first ... lift for looks or lift for performance, is a winch in the future, are heavy duty bumpers in the future, are sliders in the future? Are you going to be running rocks, running mud, or doing expedition style travel? All driving styles require different modifications. What size tire do you plan on running? That's a big one as the suspension and driveline components will be different from one size to another.

Make a list of the goals/plans, and start there.

Well its not that I don't want to lift the Rover its just not High on my list of stuff to do. Bumpers and Sliders seam more important for a Expo Discovery and I don't want to have to regear right now. All in all I want to lift it once and right but I don't want to eat in to my summer trip funds to much.

don't be a hater!

Drop an Isuzu in your d2 like Doug (Rovingbeetle) did. it would help solve your "tdi envy" issues!

I would do a cheap bastard lift. Take the rear springs and put them in the front and run OME MD or OME HD springs in the back. Used OMEs are about $75 a pair. This set up gives 1.5-2in of lift.

haha I wish! This D2 isn't getting anything like that. I'm switching back to D1 ownership when I can.

NO! Why, why, why?

If you're going to lift your truck, it's worth doing properly. With patience, you can piece together an entire aftermarket lift of RTE and OME parts for less than $300. The ride will be much better and your spring rates will be better, and your suspension will be newer, not just moved around.

How can you find a lift half price? If I could piece something together like that I would...

i think i found some 3" front springs for my truck, so i'll sell my RTE 2" front springs to you. i think on a DI it will give around exactly 2" of lift, where it gave almost 3" actual inches on my DII. let me know if you're interested and we can work out a spring for just those two front springs. it'll help you piece together a nice lift.
