thats not exactly my point.

a D is a truck that is designed as a 90" wb truck, with the appropriate track, approach, departure and breakover. the departure and breakover incrase in a 110, but it works. in the 130 range, youre talking about a center frame stretch and crappy breakover, and youre into the league of larger trucks, like an econoline, that have a much greater track, and a much greater usable volume per foot. they can be lifted and wear 36" shoes with greater stability.

so, if you need a rig with the volume of an econoline, dont try to turn a jeep into one, cause it aint gonna work. just get an econoline.

There's some validity in your argument - clearly at some point, it's not worth making a Land Rover any bigger, and one should start again with a different base.

However, I don't think the vehicle in question has necessarily reached that point. Why's it got a crappy beakover compared to any other vehicle with a 135" wheelbase? 33" tyres can be fitted without any lift whatsoever, and it's not a problem to lift it and go up a few inches from there. If you go for a vehcile with a wider track, then you give yourself other problems on tough trails (fewer driving lines to choose from, etc.).

Fact is, on a tough trail, a 130 Defender will perform as well as, if not better than, nearly anything else of similar wheelbase. Or do you think that's an over-optimistic assessment? :)

Actually the series three stage one was the predecesor in 109 wheelbase and then the 110 was introduced. The 90 came in 1984.
Having had series trucks, an NAS 90, and a lot of 110's, I would and do choose the 110 for most any trail. The 90 does have better departure angles and I do bang the rear hitch on departure sometimes but the converse is also true. Often the longer wheel base will help in traction situations. I have driven up stuff in a 110 that nearly flipped a similarly equiped 90 behind me over backwards. There will be times for both vehicles where wheelbase has its advantages and disadvanatges offroad. Since most of these trucks spend 80% or more of their lives on pavement I think longer trucks are better for long distance runs. After 4 hours on the interstate in the 90 I arrived tired

In the 110 Tdi, I get around 450 miles to a tank traveling @ 70-75 mph which is over 6hrs @ a time in the truck. It's like a night and day comparison.
I for one, drool every time Slade posts a picture of his 145 and I have gone to his website to check it out more often than I'd like to admit (really like the chuckwagon trailer Mike).

I really agree with the ride quality of the 110. My 130 is a joy to ride in and is much smother on washboard. Hill climbs are rarely a problem in the 130. Obviously tight twisty trails are problematic but thats what sliders are for, pivot points, right?

Long wheelbase vehicles are not the best but for "overland" travel the 110, 130 and 145:ylsmoke: fit the bill perfectly.
