I’ve been lurking around for a bit asking some random questions and feeling sheepish about adding my own build thread. The title alone is a lot of pressure! I have the time to start this one because …

…last Thur after my trail run I was going to pull the truck into the garage and start in on it. I couldn’t wait. But instead, a mile out from the car, I tackled a rock and broke my collarbone. It was sad to watch my buddy drive NOZOMBI around to the back of my house where it will sit for at least 4 more weeks.

Nonetheless… in the mid-90s I had a ’87, 2.4 manual Raider and loved it. Unbeknownst to me, the PO had cross-threaded the #3 plug and when it finally gave out, I couldn’t afford to get it fixed. I traded it for a Honda and have been lusting for a Raider ever since.

Jan 2014 I finally had the money and found one that met my criteria! ’89 Raider, 3.0, manual - NOZOMBI. It runs really well and it’s even more fun than I remember. Now I have some time and money and I found a white ’91 Montero LS, 3.0 manual for my donor; appropriately: White Zombie! The g/f admits the Raider’s much more my style than an Accord.

I’ve done all the basic maintenance but next is getting to the nitty gritty. The valve cover gasket leaks and while I’m in there, and as I take stuff out/put things back, the engine is getting a cleaning. From one thread it sounds like I should take a look at the lifters (I didn’t even know what lifters/lash/tappetts were until Monday!..thanks, normal_dave!), PCV, O2, timing belt, water pump, cam seals (also learned from someone on the site), hoses, take anything that looks like a radiator to the radiator shop, and a host of other parts that are waiting to be put on. I’ll likely order a lot as I find things that need to be done. I think that’s rhetorical.

Then the fun stuff. The LS is going to generously donate:

• Oil cooler
• A/C - I got such a weird Q&A session from a shop because I want them to evacuate the R12. I might have to go through security and a background check…. I hope to contribute a how to on this one.
• Cruise - doesn’t work now but I’m industrious, I’ll be using Jay Ayala's thread.
• Headlight washer- …er, same doesn’t work thing…but I picked one a while back so hopefully I can get one of them to work. Jay Ayala also has a thread on these over at 4x4wire and it’s been my assumption the pump is wonky. I can hear the relay click.
• Passenger bouncy seat – Picked the dr side already from a yard so I have a spare. I’ll be looking to sell that one. My g/f thought I was going to sell the pass side and quickly reminded me that she was getting a bouncy seat. I think I may have her hooked on the truck…which she isn’t yet calling a truck. 
• LSD - can I just swap axle assemblies? I’m a lot afraid about what I’m getting into here.

As well as a slew of other things: rear defrost relay, signal relay, secondary lights control (just a blank?), some minor console stuff, cargo light, bumpers, stock side mirrors, any body panels which are in better condition than mine, skid plates, complete lock cylinders so I’ll only need 1 key, maybe the chrome Mitsu grill, whatever other things look like they need a new home. And some disconnected, random, in-line 15A fused wire that runs from the battery into the cabin…a mystery to be solved. Not the sunroof, power locks or power windows…gotta draw the line somewhere…Those will come up for sale, too. Though putting in the sunroof would be pretty cool.

Then some more fun stuff:

• Lights – bumper? Rack? decisions…
• Roof rack (thank you craigslist for the towers and bars)
• Jerry cans: gas/water (Girlfriend: Why do you need those? Me: I don’t. G/F: )
• Dual battery
• Bigger amp alternator - where would I one find one that will fit? Pick one and fab a bracket?
• Inverter
• Cargo area shelf system – maybe…wondering about flexibility for cramming the tent/cooler/et al if I put in a custom system.
• Carpet - is stockinteriors.com any good?
• Dynamat
• Radio
• Reupholster seats
• Removable doors (yes, yes, Darwin Award…I got it…)
• Paint – I pick-n-pulled a door because the one I had was bent. The PO had rhino-ed the entire Raider (except a perfect 2’x3’ spot on the roof…?). Fortunately, the paint on the jamb contact of the door is the exact red I want. Color match!
• Ooga horn from grandpas truck. (He’s dead; he’ll never know…)
• I put brand new tires on it when I bought it but some bigger ones may be in the future.
• And some wheels. I had chrome on my ’87.

After all this, I’m going to take the “LS” from the side of the Montero and put it below the “Raider” logo. :)

While I’m waiting to heal up, it just gives me with more time reading what ya’ll do and giving me more ideas, searching for and ordering parts as well as ordering tools to work on said parts. And a lot of time with my nose in the FSM, Haynes, Mitchell and the Chilton’s online reference.

While this is a stretch goal, I’d like to come up with a way to add a (removable) modern touch. I think it would be super cool to wire into a Raspberry Pi with a touch screen for real time diagnostics/data. I’d like to plug into the MUT harness, cruise test port, and the several other open wiring harnesses which are exposed for reading the various systems. There is a lot of research to do on that though it may be worth it to do that sooner to help troubleshoot engine issues. Definitely a stretch goal, though.

BTW, it got the NOZOMBI name because I thought I was going to deck it out with all sorts of fun post-apocalyptic stuff. The longer I’ve had it, the more stock I want it. :)

Here is is before working door and taking the tint off.

Thanks for making it this far!

for the alternator:

if you are keeping the clutch fan and engine original :

use a 120A 1994 dodge cummins alt..same as the gas engine dodge i think. 127.00 at napa
added benefit :its a denso not a mitsu thus commonly avail and cheap parts

dont worry about getting a 4 rib pulley for the denso just run the 6 rib pulley thats on it with your 4 rib mitsu spec belt.

the alternator should bolt in.

here is where it gets a little tricky.
you will externally regulate it with a mopar regulator from a ....73 duster 318, say. bout 25.00

there are a million diagrams online for the wiring. simple.
i mounted regulator on battery shield and thru bolted it with double stud bolt; the backside with a cable ground directly to batt.

another method:

i also junked my clutch fan, fan bracket, idlers, tensioners and fan shroud. leaving front of engine clear. i went with taurus fan, dakota digi controller, and one single belt from crank to alt.(51.75 inches) and some tricky trial and error on the tensioner. happy to report it works dreamy.
wide open, simple. i built the radiator into a three row ; so much capacity the fan never comes on.
it will periodically in low speed driving. light on dash to tell me so.
