The Official Bacon Thread. (Got your attention?)

So, I checked the last ten years of posts and didn't see a dedicated post to the god of food, "Bacon" so I thought I would share a lovely family owned butcher/meat smoker in Madisonville, Tennessee that makes (and ships) incredible hickory smoked bacon and other less important meats.

Anyway, my lovely wife and partner in all things fun learned about Benton's bacon several years ago during a kitchen tour at a New Orleans restaurant. She subsequently ordered some for me and I've been hooked ever since. During our cross country trip this year to OE East 18 we specifically detoured to stop at Bentons. While there, we received a tour from the owner, learned their history, how they support their community and subsequently purchased a significant amount of bacon and hams. If you've ever eaten in an upscale eatery and had a meal ith bacon it was most likely Bentons. Heck, even Anthony Bourdain talked about Bentons!

Bacon Expert Tip: this stuff is so smoky you literally only need one piece to season a dish and only two pieces for an incredible BLT.......now, you can eat more then one of course! And, the drippings are their own food group/seasoning and will add incredible flavor to any dish it's added too!

No connection with Bentons, we just love Tennessee, what they are doing, their history, their local roots and really just wanted to start a Bacon thread!

I guess I get to be “that guy” today....

You do know that the World Health Organization tells us “processed meats” are now classified as a group 1 carcinogen, meaning scientists were certain that there was “sufficient” evidence that they caused cancer, particularly colon cancer. Bacon is, of course, a processed meat. Here is a good article on it:

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/01/bacon-cancer-processed-meats-nitrates-nitrites-sausages

Let the flaming begin!

Mmmm....group 1 carcinogens...mmm....

There are so many studies that mention things that will kill you that it is now to the point of being overwhelming. Conversely, it seems that eventually there will be a report that contradicts almost every report. Remember when eggs were bad for you? I seem to recall that the current thing is sugar.
If you like your bacon, enjoy it.

Heard a discussion on the radio yesterday similar to this. They were saying "remember when they said eating fat was bad? So eat less fat and eat more carbs."

I hear you and don’t entirely disagree. However, it’s worth it to see who funds/sponsors those counter stories...often it’s the corporation or industry that has a vested interest in selling you the items that are slowly killing you.

I get it.....and in over three decades l've most likely been potentially exposed to pretty much everything that could kill ya.....but, eat a balanced diet, don't overdue one thing or another, excercise, get plenty of rest, reduce stress and flush your system with fiber and you should be fine. Cheers.

I'm thinking I want to order some. I'm ok with the cost of the product, but I'm wondering about shipping costs. Do you only pick some up when in the area? From their website:

High cost of shipping

Charged $27.05 for package that cost Benton's $13.65 to send priority mail. Called and asked to have shipping reviewed. First time was told it would be ..never was..Second call was told I could cancel the order or send it back. Works out to about $12 a pound...bacon may be good..but not $12 a pound good...

We're fortunate to have a local place that carries Benton's. It really is a whole different level of bacon.

I think I need a bigger truck!
We are fortunate to have some great local places that make some killer bacon. On Vancouver Island there is a place caller Hertel's (http://hertelmeats.ca/) and its worth the little extra that they charge. Super smokey and nice thick cut. I really like their Ayrshire Bacon, it's like a combo between Ham, Back-bacon and regular Bacon.

Now I want bacon.

Bacon.

Nice thanks . When I was a Boy Scout , back in the 1970's, we would buy canned bacon , made in Hungry for our camping trips.
It was not very expensive couple three bucks. Now a can of bacon is $24.00 insane .
