The Travel French Press Reviewed

I really enjoy Sarah's writing style. She had me chuckling about the attention span of a Golden Retriever. Ordered the GSI based on her recommendation. I will be spending more time on your site.

Maybe its just me but I have never liked coffee from a french press. I must be doing something wrong.

French press tends to suffer from one thing that it cannot avoid:

Grit. THere is always a certain amount of grit in french press coffee- stuff that made it past the mesh. It also tends to be have more of the "oils"- as it doesnt have any paper to absorb the oils from the coffee.

I happen to enjoy it, but I also happen to enjoy any kind of coffee. Hardly a purist, but I do like to switch it up. My current thing is aeropress, but still gladly have a drip cup in the morning.

I will filter my French press coffee through a napkin towards the end...

That's exactly what I do with French press, pour it through a cheese cloth or something similar to catch the grinds that made it past.

But now I cheat and use a coleman propane drip machine. Not quite as good, but gets a higher quantity of coffee into my belly.

Not a French press, but you get your strong coffee without grit (not that I don't like it, my coffee of preference is Turkish :D )

I don't mind the grit. Hell, I don't mind if I have coffee grounds either.:ylsmoke: Maybe it's the grind of the coffee that I've tried. It always seemed week to me. For many years now, I have been using a Melita single cup brewer. When I grind my coffee, I turn the knob all the way to Turkish, then back one click. Works awesome and dirt cheap. I buy filters at Costco. Three pound bag of Colombian is $14. Happy, happy, happy!

I can take it on trips and not worry about breaking it.
