BTW, the AX15 gear ratios are as follow (found on NAXJA)
1st. 3.83
2nd. 2.33
3rd. 1.44
4th. 1.0
5th. 0.79
5th gear IS an overdrive. Outside of BMW, most 5 speeds, 5th is an OD ratio. Also, everything I am reading says, the AX15 and 4.0L equipped XJ's have 3.07 ratio axles. Looking at the ratio of the tranny, I would look at 4.10's, otherwise 1st might be useless on the street.
I know with my AW4 on 31's, I pull 19-21 mpg highway, as long as I stay under 70 mph. Even towing our Kamparoo, we get 17-19 mpg, again keeping it about 65 mph. When I get into the hills, I end up using 3rd most of the time, which doesn't really hurt the mileage. From what I have read, because the torque curve is fairly flat until about 3500 rpm's, the mileage doesn't drop off nearly as much, even when towing, then a lot of other vehicles.
