thinking of making an fj60 purchase

I have always been interested in a fj60-62 and I have come across one for $1500. Is it worth it?

Positives
- No rust
- It drives

Negatives
- Smells like crap (dog and smoke)
- 240k miles
- cracked windshield
- power steering not working
- ac not blowing cold air
- paint is as to be expected

The first thing i would need to do is get the car smelling ok and the power steering fixed. Do they sell aftermarket seats for the front (they are very uncomfortable). I don't have a lot of money to replace everything at once and I'm sure it needs a lot of work, with an engine over-haul in the future. Is this truck worth it and will i be able to drive it while I work on it?

ALthough the price of 60's are now low, to realize the legendary reliability for which they are famous will require a lot of your time (if your mechanically inclined) and money for parts or to have someone do the work for you. 60's are much simpler to work on than 62 series and have pretty simple systems. No rust is a great place to start. If your motor is tired, you can usually find a decent 2f pretty cheap as alot of people swap in a 350 or the like. A well tuned 2f is adequate for these trucks...just barely. Prepare to slow down and take in the scenery, people will pass you on hills like you are standing still, but at least you look good going slow. The h55 5 speed is a great upgrade that changes the driving dynamics significantly. The best advice I could give you is to have the truck checked out and make your decision based on facts and not emotion. Ask me how I know.

Positives
- No rust - This is a good thing.
- It drives - Another good thing.

Negatives
- Smells like crap (dog and smoke) - Leave the windows open when you drive and use a lot of Fabreeze, it'll eve
- 240k miles - Not to bad for these trucks.
- cracked windshield - Put it on the to do list.
- power steering not working - Make this a priority. You're gonna hate trying to turn that thing.
- ac not blowing cold air - Depends on where you live. But, it not working does give great opportunity to air it out.
- paint is as to be expected - Deal with it later.

I'd pick it up. No rust is a big deal. Fix the power steering, gut the interior and put some paint on bed liner in and go have fun!
