Threaded Battery Terminals ?

My STARKPOWER Lifepo4 batteries have 5/16's threaded terminal posts. is there any benefit to this or should i get post adapters?. the post adapters themselves were not easy to find but i did manage to find a pair of Zinc adapters on Ebay that matched up. it seems that the majority of terminal options are designed for posts and not threads. whats the point of threaded terminals?

thanks, Brad

Most non automotive batteries use threaded connection of some kind.
There is no single reason for it. Partly its historical/traditional.
Eliminate posts equals less material cost.
Posts help counter human nature factor of 1/2asserism. Everybody sees battery posts what initially never tighened well or of crap material then stretched loose.

that makes sense and would explain why hardly anything comes up in automotive searches. looks like ill be ordering the adapters then.

Post adapters should be common items in just about any NAPA or other large auto parts store. I ended up using them when I got threaded batteries just to preserve all the factory battery cables. Note, they wiggle loose occasionally, I have had to tighten them on a few occasions to correct intermittent start conditions. If I was to do it over, I would probably just buy appropriate ring terminals and crimp them to the factory battery cables.

My guess would be that without posts on top there is more room in the engine compartment but the idea of corrosion control seems more reasonable.

Just be ready for 5/16 negative threads and 3/8 positive threads on some batteries. I suppose it's to protect us from reversing the cables? Easily mitigated by carrying a set of each size posts

I think Grp 78 auto batteries are side terminal, and 34/78 and 78 DT have both side terminals and top posts. Side terminal batteries are shorter than the same battery with top posts, so will fit into some tighter spaces. I just fixed a problem with a side terminal on one of my 34/78s that would intermittently come up as dead, even though the multimeter showed good SOC. This one is the primary starting battery and part of a dual battery system in my old beater Z71, and it turned out that vibration had apparently damaged the threads in the battery so that contact with the threaded stud was inconsistent. Tightened just right it was OK until it vibrated loose, but tightened just a little more and it lost contact. So I added a 2ga jumper from the side terminal to the top terminal and all is good again.
