I am Selling my Thuraya Satellite phone since I won't be doing my Africa overland trip...
The Thuraya ASCOM provides integrated dual band satellite,
GSM modes and GPS navigation, along with voice, data, fax and SMS.
The GSM functionality of the Thuraya ASCOM enables you to roam onto the
networks of GSM providers. Using a Thuraya SIM card with GSM mode
selected on your handset, you can make calls using the GSM network of
Thuraya's GSM partners, comprising over 270 providers across 130 countries.
This handset also provides convenient access to SMS. When
connected to a PC, you can also access data and fax at 9.6 kbps.
