Tie downs for an 04-06 Wrangler Unlimited? (LJ)

I would like to know what all you guys with the LJ's are doing in the rear cargo area for tie downs. Those little wire pull thingies from the manufacture are too small to put a rachet strap onto, and their location is...not the best use of space.

What are you guys doing? Grind them off? Fab your own? I'd love to learn from your experiences, and would really like to see any photos if you have them.

ExpeditionExchange.com sell some really nice units that I will be using when I get around to installing some. Not cheap but definitely nice.

It is not safe to have the stuff in the back as I do now without tie it down.

Until I take the time to find a solution, I just slip the long strap from my ratchet strap, then thread that strap through the tie down and then slip it back into the ratchet strap. The hook on the long strap just sort of lays there, it ain't pretty and definitely redneck but it works.

I have the rear seat and brackes removed, I have installed "I" bolts in the place of the hold down bolts and it works just fine.

I haven't pulled the carpet out. Are the brackets removable, or do you need to cut them out? Would love to a photo if you have one!

LOL, that's exactly what I did this past weekend, and it was a pain to untie the webbing whenever I needed into the cooler or stuff box (the smaller ActionPacker from Rubbermaid is PERFECT back there.)

New computer so I hope I got the pictures right. I took out where the rear seat attaches and have the "I" bolts attached. I did not need to move the carpet, the only downside I have seen is that you can't "tie down" in the whole rear using the bolts but so far it has served me just fine.

I think I may have a solution for this as well as for the trailer guys. I'm in the process of scrapping out a bunch of open top semi pup trailers. in each one I have @ 8 tie down D rings that are on a plate that is maybe 5"x 3". the only catch is the D rings will need to have space recessed @1/4" to fit flush and they are heavily rusted. its all surface rust but it is a heavy layer. I have been saving these to post up for sale as they definately have another life in them but thought I'd post a preview as they applied to this thread. I only have one trailer done but still have at least 5 more trailers to do. I think one can use a hole saw and make the recessed hole then rivet these in place for a more functional tie down point. I'm still contemplating my asking price but think it will be in the $2-3 range a piece plus actual shipping charges. once I have a few trailers done and some quantity in my possession I will offer these up for sale in the approriate forum.
