Tire Fixes on the Trail

I see that many kits are now supplying extra valve stems such as the Ultimate Puncture Repair Kit by Extreme Outback and sold by Sierra Expeditions. How do you install a new valve stem without the use of the valve stem tool like the one sold by Expedition Exchange?

A set of pliers works. A lot of the time you can just wiggle one in by hand if necessary.

Although this tool makes it easier to pull the valve into place on the rim it is not essential.

You can use channel locks or pliers. The trick is to pull straight up on the valve, not to lever it in place by placing the pliers against the rim and rotating it sideways as you pull upward. Doing so will tear the valve.
