Tires and lift

Hey all,

A friend of mine has a 2012 or so Rubicon. He wants to know the largest reasonable tire size he can throw in there with a 2" lift, and what to buy for the 2" lift. Not a hard off roader, just a mall crawler with wheel well filling sneakers.

TIA

That's what I figured as I've seen a few, but wasn't sure about necessary offset, what stock gearing is like, and what 2" lift people are running. Thanks Scott.

:sombrero: Tell your friend to join one of the jeep forums--

Answering a new jeep owners questions can be on the edge of futility and using a middle man makes things misleading and erroneous-

Lifts and tire sizes can have multipage answers and should be to the jeep owner !

He's a bit older and doesn't use computers well. He also runs a business and doesn't have time for the forum addiction. I appreciate the insight and I'll offer him that option.

I've been part of jeep forums for over 10 years and I've seen so many problems with a friend trying to just help a new jeep owner buddy-

It actually was a lot easier with the old jeeps (YJ/TJ), but the newer JK/JKUs are expensive trouble spots-

In reality, there's almost NO MODIFICATION you can make to a JK/JKU suspension, without future attention/maintenance with constant needs-

The new jeeps (2012 +) have openend a whole new bag of worms--they just ain't just simple jeeps anymore !

Good luck

Thanks Jimbo... I'm used to that kind of answer. So if you have a moment, can you explain the issues? I'm assuming they're still coil sprung, solid axle? So castor, axle centering, drift shaft angle, sway bars, are the issues? What else?

The JK can handle 33" tires stock (might need wheel spacers if using stock wheels). 2.5" and 35s go great together (again will likely need wheel spacers if using stock wheels).

Something to keep in mind (and if he's not wheeling it - it almost certainly won't be an issue) is that the 2012s have the exhaust going in front of the cross member. This can lead to front drive shaft failure when the front axle drops. Rubber boot melts on the exhaust, then DS fails. Pre 2012s do not have this issue. There's a $35 exhaust spacer that would push the exhaust behind the cross member if he's worried about it.

For a 2.5" lift (really all he needs), there's several brands out there. My buddy has OME's lift (just shocks and springs) and loves it. However there's others out there that are a tad more complete. People more knowledgeable than me can tell you what is needed (component wise) for a half decent lift.

:sombrero: Good points-

The 2012 pentastars had a multitude of 3.6L head "ticks", covered by warranty(down time), I think thats fixed-

The 2012 +, JK/JKUs are having an auto tranny coolant line TSB, because of steering pump line abrasion-no parts avail.

The majority of 2012+ new owners, especially the "newbys" are finding their 2012-- JK/JKUs ARE SUPPLIED /W 3.21 DIFF. GEARS AND WITH A STICK--MANAGEABLE, AUTO not-

There's notta lotta advice that can be obtained from previous JK/JKU (07/11) jeep owners--just to many different mechanical changes to the new ones-

Good day

Are you serious? 3.21??? What's the t-case ratio?

Thanks for the note about the drive shaft issue, it's a similar one I have on the Rover.

Where are people buying their parts?
