TJ camping setup

Has anyone come up with a good sleeping arrangement for a TJ? I have always camped in the Land Rover, due to it's size, but anyone have thoughts? Just a one person setup is fine.

Hey Gavin, long time no talk! Looks like we have both turned to the Jeep side. I've had mine for about 3 years and love it.

The problem with sleeping in a TJ is the way the passenger seat folds forward. The back portion doesn't fold anywhere NEAR flat, or far forward enough. I'm sure you've seen Jo's set up in the back of his D90. It would be difficult to do something similar because of the shape of the TJ tub and the way the seat folds.

I have slept somewhat comfortably in the passenger seat pushed back all the way and reclined to a decent angle. It's not ideal, and I have found that carrying a tent is much easier overall!

Hi Gavin,

Take a look at these threads:

I have an Autohome Overcamp roof tent that goes next to the kayaks that are usually up there.

Cheers,
Graham

I was thinking about that, but then again, I'd like to keep the front passenger seat in.

Adam, how's it been going? I wish the seat would fold forward, but I suppose we can't have everything. I think I'm going to start out trying to recline the passanger seat as far back as I can, making it into a somewhat bed to see how it goes. I do, however, need to remove a rack I've got in the back. The rear seat has already been taken out, so that's not a problem.

Just was wondering if there was something else I was possibly missing in design.

Gavin it is time to update your eXpO avatar....

could you swap out the passenger seat for something more versatile? that would preserve your ability to carry a passenger but also allow a platform?

Updated it C.

I was hoping to keep the front seat in, ultimately, as I don't want to have to fiddle with taking it out and putting it back in when done. I don't know what else I could put in place of it. If the seats went all the way back, that would work, but I don't think there is any way of getting them to recline all the way.

I really may try this hammock idea, then in the summer I could string it from the roll bars to a tree.

i was thinking just changing the seat permanently for something of different dimensions...that hammock is cool but you'll still want a warm tent for those winter trips...

Man, I get so stoked whenever those threads are linked. What a fun set-up that was, and so easy to do. Wish I had taken more pics of it...

grobinson, I like the hammock idea, that could work quite well. Don't sweat the front seat removal though. If you've already pulled the back seat, the front is no harder. Four bolts and that's it. Taking the top off was a bigger PITA than removing the passenger seat.

Having the bunk running from tailgate to the glove compartment, covered with a Thermarest and sleeping bag, gave me a great little "workspace". Plenty of room to leave the camera, a journal, maps, a thermos, binoculars, water bottle, etc. all out and within easy reach. Simplicity at it's finest...

Enjoy your research and brainstorming. That's always the fun part -

A tent cot would be really easy for one person and you could keep both front seats. Not quite so covert for sleeping in downtown Boston but it would work well in the woods.

Those threads are how I found expo in the first place: I started out looking for a cheap sleep-two-in-or-on-a-wrangler solution which resulted in a RTT and now I want an electric fridge. KC, all I can say is its all your fault. Thanks! :)

Cheers,
Graham
