tools fro splicing BIG synthetic winch line

my dad gave me a synthetic winch line off one of there digger trucks at work. i need to put eyes with thimbles in the ends but can not find any info for thimbles or fids. the rope measures 1 1/4" in diameter. my dad called it samson rope but was using that as a generic term. it may aor may not be samson brand. thanks for the info.

Annapolis Performance Sailing, Fisheries Supply, or Layline should have what you need. That failing a Bic pen makes a good fid and a large knitting needle makes a fine pusher. Or get a really long knitting needle and solder on a little snare (little metal wire loop on the end) and make a wand. Note that a wand works backwards from a fid -- you start at the end and weave the wand through the rope all the places the splice needs to cross, attach the end that you tapered in the snare and pull it all through.

For a line that thick I would do a lock stitch on x and y axis (two sets, perpendicular to each other).

i'll check the sites above. i have looked at samsons site and i think i know which line i have. if i can determine this for sure that will help quite a bit. i'll look into it. thanks.

Nice rope, but what on earth are you going to use it for?? If it's winch-line, don't be tempted to use it as a tow-rope!

Based on the diameter, I kind of assumed it was being used on a trawler. I can't imagine an automotive application beyond a tree strap. 1 1/4" SK75 (Amsteel blue, etc.) probably has a breaking strength just shy of hoisting a battle ship and SK60 is probably about 100,000 lb., but that is just a guess.

Per Michael's post, 100' of that rope will elongate several centimeters (10-15), it won't really stretch at all. If you tried to yank someone out with that line it would probably destroy both vehicles.

i was thinking of using it as a winch line extension, when i get a winch. it is one of those things that i will do something with just because dad was so happy that he found it for me. 50/50 useful and sentimental.
