Torn boot on inner tie rod. Urgent fix? Please drop some knowledge on me!

I'm in the process of building out an '06 AWD Express 1500. While I had the wheels off, I noticed that the boot on the inner tie rod (passenger side) is pretty eroded.

Good boot, for comparison:

I'm about to leave on a 1200 mile drive with a loaded van and towing a full 12' trailer... I really ought to take care of this before the drive, right? I'm a total beginner when it comes to steering/suspension, but I'm sure the answer is yes, so....

  1. Can I replace the boot only? If so, can it be done without removing the tie rod?
  2. If not, do I need to replace both inner and outer tie rods?
  3. What about the tie rod on the driver side - do passenger and driver side need to be replaced at the same time?

I've found a couple youtube How To videos and this seems like something that is well within my capabilities (and tool set), I just want to make sure I do it right.

Much appreciated!

My $.02 is that if it's not sloppy, you should be fine. Jack up the van by the lower control arm on that side and try to wiggle the tire back and forth. If it clunks and you feel slop, something needs replaced. No slop, hit the road!! You can do a quick search on rockauto or oreillys and see if a boot is available. I bet it is, and you'll just have to take the outer tie rod off to replace it. No need to replace any parts that aren't bad. Might wipe that one down with a rag and see what the problem is. It really shouldn't be all oily like that. The boot is more of a dust seal than an oil seal, so if it's oily, the rack might need new seals, or replaced.

Since your not inclined to remove and repair then degrease it and seal the hole with black RTV silicone. If not just run it and worry about it when you get back.

There is a split boot available that you can slip over that one to keep grease in and stuff out. Check local parts stores. Should only take about 20mins

If there's no play in the joint itself I wouldn't worry about it right now. It's just a dust boot. Really some inner rods are a pain and then you will also need an alignment just wait until you need tires or a alignment and do it at the same time. Chevy have issues with tie rods anyways so when you get the time just do them all and align and be done with it.
