Torsion Bar adjustment problem on 95 4Runner

Put in OME 1.5" lift springs in the rear and now have the stinkbug attitude. Took it in for alignment / adjustment and the guys told me that the torsion bars were already "cranked" all the way up prior to me getting there. Given the low miles and the copious service history (which shows no alignment ever being done) this does not seem right. Second opinion time or are the front bars often in need of adjustment and this a likely possibility?

Thoughts?

It would seem you need some heavier duty torsion bars. Sway-a-way makes a 25mm set and Old Man Emu makes them as well. I've also heard of people reindexing their torsion bars too.

I don't think it's very likely that they're already cranked to max, but, as others have also said, I would recommend the 25mm torsion bars (Downey had 26mm bars available when they were still in business, but those were too stiff).
What may be more likely is that the adjusters are stuck or frozen. For the next week or two spray a bit of penetrating oil on them every day and hope they loosen up a bit - something good like PB Blaster, not WD40. It's not unheard of for the adjuster bolt to break if it's completely frozen, but parts are just a junkyard or dealership away. Also, if they are already cranked to max, there won't be any bolt threads exposed at the top arrow <- something for you to look at.

IIRC the torsions have a master spline that would have to be ground or cut down for that to happen.

Corax - thanks for the info! Great reply and I appreciate it.

Took it to the other shop and they made the adjustment and did an alignment with no problem.

All better now! Pays to shop around.
