Towing an FJ40 with a 95 Monty

Hi guys,

I'm picking up an FJ40 soon in New Mexico... I'm faced with the challenge of towing an FJ40 for either 581 miles or 327 miles. I was originally thinking of towing with a tow bar similar to this setup...

I'm now thinking that a tow dolly from Uhaul or similar would be safer.

What do you guys think? My other options are begging my neighbor to let me borrow his Dodge 1500 pickup or Mr. Leary to let me borrow his FZJ80. Both being significantly heavier than my Monty.

Thoughts??

It's kind of funny you should ask. I just brought home a BJ42 and i towed it home on a u-haul car transporter using an '08 Nissan Armada with the big tow package. I think if you can borrow something with a V8 then use that esp with a full trailer that way you are not risking damaging not only the tow vehicle but also the FJ40. The FJ40, if it's in original form, is deceivingly heavy for its size. If your neighbour won't lend it to you then just rent a pick up from u-haul and tow worry free of burning a transmission or clutch, etc.

That FJ40 will fit nicely on that car hauler by the way. Mine did and it's running 35's at the moment.

My .02 cents, i hope that helps ;)

I believe you will exceed you gross combined vehicle weight rating and would stand out like a sore thumb to the authorities.:coffee:

I would say no to a U-Haul tow dolly. I have tow dollyed a BJ40 about 400 km with a full size Dodge V8 Ram Van. It wasn't a fun experience. Although the van was setup to be a trailer tugboat, the van brakes sure didn't like the unbraked dolly. Also, not sure about where you live, but some areas require that any vehicle towed with a dolly be licensed.

Also, 40 series trucks are deceptively heavy. A hardtop with a 2F, a tank of fuel and light mods can hit 4000 lbs pretty easily (the 2F is a heavy engine!). A Uhaul auto hauler (the full trailer) comes in around 2000 lbs empty. That combo is too much for a Monty.

Long way of saying: Leave the Montero at home, rent/borrow a proper trailer and borrow a full size truck.
