Okay guys, the wonders of the internet has 5 diffrent answers to this, so please help me out. Even here I found answers for the manual trans with lockign hubs, but nothign for my setp. I figure you guys tow more than most, so hopefully you have the answer.

I have the Crawl 4 Christ event in MO next month and my origional plan to borrow a tow dolly fell through. The owner needs to tow to PA that same week. So back to square 1.

I have a 1998 4Runner, Automatic transmission with the manual transfer case with Neutral. The hubs are automatic, no locks on them. I am considering flat towing. If I fab up a bar and such, can I town in Neutral and transfer case neutral or do I still need to disconnect the drive shaft. If so, which one or both?

Anyone have a lightweight trailer (less than 2000# or tow dolly I can borrow? :ylsmoke:

Transfer case in nuetral and remove rear drive shaft. Front diff is ADD, so no need to remove front driveshaft. The tow bars work moderately well... just remember not to put the truck in reverse.

Well, I picked up a tow bar yesterday to install this weekend. I will admit, I am a bit worried about flat towing all the way to MO, but with my family size and age, driving 2 trucks is not possible.

Any Toyota tecs that can verify the front DS will NOT be spinning anything that can get hurt since the truck is not running?

So I set it up to flat tow and test it, the front DS turns! Is this going to be a problem since the input will not be turning and slinging oil? If so, I guess I will have to reinstall the skids plates in MO when I get there in order to remove the front DS also.

Please help ASAP. I want to have the skids on if I can, but no access to the DS if they are on.

Unfortunately, it says do not flat tow, n ooptions or reasons. I am sure it is the transfer case issues because it says if you MUST use even a tow dolly, disconnect the rear drive shaft. I think the oil slinger is hooked to the unput, so it will not be oiling.

I disconnect the front drive shaft today, now all I have left is the rear on Tuesday.
