Toyota Hilux deisel Earth Roamer type rig

I was in Carlsbad, CA the other day and saw a white Hilux coming the other way on the 101, and heard the diesel as it went by.
It had a fiberglass type camping thing on the back similar to the earth roamer vehicles. From what i could tell
in my rear view mirror, it had license plates that weren't from this country, though i couldn't tell from the distance what country.

Anyone seen this truck or anything like it anywhere? I wasn't able to get a picture as I was going to fast.

Likely Canadian Eh. Many Landcruisers and Hilux motorhomes have been brought into Canada from Japan at the ripe old age of 15 years. As a backyard Canadian importer myself, was always impressed with the units available; low miles with high build quality at top dollar, with small interior space.

Common complient of the JDM campers was a lack of power for interstate travel with more urban gearing. High desirability though; if it didn't cost me triple the purchase price and twice the shipping, I would have grabbed a 80 series four door camper.

Saw a red 70 series troopie along the PCH between San Fran and San Simeon when I was there last thanksgiving.. guess that could have come from Canada as well.. Definitely wouldn't be a US owned vehicle huh?

What a stupid rule.. we can't import them, yet foreigners can drive them all over our roads..

I saw both of those camped together last fall in Washington state. There was no one around to talk to but they looked very good and well laid out.

Cool rigs for sure.

I believe I was on my way to Navajo National Monument when I saw them at the Indian reservation gas station. They must get around :sombrero:

P.S. its hard as hell to find synthetic oil anywhere in that area...

If I remember right, the sand colored one had a map on the one side with there travels drawn on it. Looked like they had done all of Africa, Asia and a lot of Siberia (maybe mixing that up with a unimog I saw last summer though). There plates indicate they are from the Netherlands.

I wonder if the thought is you can replace your windshield if needed in teh field and tape/cover the the camper opening. I assumed the door pods were storage/ aerodynamic helpers.... maybe I am giving someone too much credit?
