Toyota Land Cruiser 70-series steel wheels on 2001 Tacoma?

I'm sure you guys here on ExPo have already dealt with this question many times, so I hope this won't be too hard. Didn't see the answer in any searches I've done...

I'd like to put steel wheels on my 2001 Tacoma Double Cab. Used to run them in place of the alloys on my 1990 Saab 900 Turbo, and had them for 29 years on our family's 1980 Toyota Pickup.

For simple asethetics, I kinda like silver OEM Toyota designs. There are a number of posts, and images, of what I believe is a late 60-series / 70-series Toyota Land Cruiser 6-hole/6-lug wheel. This one has Toyota part number 42601-60262-03.

This thread has a good discussion with images. (Thanks, 24HOURSOFNEVADA)

My question is mainly around backspacing for use on the Tacoma, and measurements I think I've got right. The 42601-60262-03 wheel is a 16 x 6 with 3.5 inches backspacing. My Tacoma's wheels are 16 x 7 with 4.5 inches backspacing.

Is anyone on the forum using these with good results? Any images? Any comments about suitability? Any other ideas I haven't thought of?

Thanks in advance,

Don

PS: I know one of the other options could be the 80-series TLC 5-hole/6 lug wheel with 4.5 inches backspacing, and some of the Tacoma/Tundra wheels from around 2000 - 2005. The 16-hole Tacoma spare style is also an option. The 6-spoke wheels are my first choice.

3.5" BS is about the right measurements for the era up to 1990 for US LCs. They should be fine but however will stick further outside the truck by an inch or so to your other wheels.

I saw the picture before I started reading and thought, I know that rug! I used that wheel on my 80 series, my 45 pick up and I think we even mounted it on Redline's 4Runner to check it out. No problems and one of my favorite wheels.

I recommended them to another 80 owner on this site, Ashooter and he has some nice images on his write up. To get an idea of the back spacing he provides a nice "Head on" image.

Bringing back an oldie...

Do you have pictures of this wheel mounted on Redline's 4Runner? I'm seriously thinking about getting these for my 3rd gen and mounting up some 255/85R16 Toyo Open Country MT's to them.

I have these wheels now in my garage, awaiting some time and warmer temperatures to mount (most probably) BFG AT 235/85-16 tires on them. My estimates show a net offset increase, as I recall, of +0.5 inches. I expect no issues with clearance, bearing loads, suspension geometry with tall skinnies.

I'll post pix of course.

I'm going to check into these at the local toyota junk yard and see if they have any. I would like that 6" wide rim to suck in my 265's. Plus being a 6" wide they are probably lighter than the stock spare steelies.

just sold a pair of these. they are NOT light by any means.

i had them mounted on a '94 toyota 4x4 pickup. they work just fine, but they did cause the wheels/tires to stick out a bit further....not much, maybe a 1/2 inch or so.

Do you remember a weight by chance?

sorry, i never did weigh them. i currently am running a set of steel "spare" wheels, the old kind w/o holes and i would honestly say that they are close to the same weight with the LC style a little lighter--that's going by the 'ol one in each hand guesstimate.

I'm starting to think twice about these wheels. My current 80 series wheels stick out quite a bit outside of my fenders. If these 70 series wheels stick out even more than a stock 80 wheel, then even with a narrower 255 (vs. a 285) it will still stick out a fair amount. I really dislike the stock wheels that came with my 4Runner so now I am not sure what to do.

They might not stick out further on an 80-series. Need to check against the backspacing of your originals. Most of the earlier comments about sticking out were not LC based, and I don't know the details for all the LC series. Plenty of folks here do, though...

These wheels have a backspacing of 3.75 inches.

Stock 3rd Gen 4Runner wheels are 4-5/8", LC wheels are 4-1/2" and these 70 series steelies are (3.5" from what I've read). That's an additional inch out for me.

16x6 w/3.5"bs- 3.5 from the 6" width = 2.5" out from the wheel mounting surface (disk/drum face)

16x7 w/4.5"bs- 4.5" from the 7" width = 2.5" out from the wheel mounting surface (disk/drum face)

Both wheels will stick out the same. True, the tire sidewalls will balloon more with the 6" and will actually center the tire out about 1/2".
