Took the family out and met up with some friends to hike Mt. Huron. At 14,003 ft Huron just barely qualifies as a 14er, but its still big and beautiful. After heading south from Leadville on route 24, then west on FR 390, the road splits at the old town of Winfield.
We took the south fork to access Mt. Huron at the end of a short 4x4 road. The road isn't gnarly but can be rocky and steep. It was our first time using low range with the camper. Its always fun crawling and bouncing around.
There were many other groups enjoying the mountains this weekend and many campsites were full. But we settled on this spot to spend a few days. Beautiful!
With a group of 9 people, and a summer sunday morning, we took our time getting ready, but finally reached the trailhead and started hiking. Once above treeline, Huron's west face comes into view and the scenerey begins to open up.
The final push to the summit.
On the top! This is my 9 year old daughter's first 14er summit, she was amazing. Now she says she wants to bag them all.
The views from the top of Huron are among the best I have seen. These three peaks dominate and are called the Three Apostles.
Ice Mountain and the Refrigerator Couloir. I'll be back to ski this one, hopefully next spring when it is more full.
Even the hike down is spectacular.
Once back at camp, everybody had to pack up and head home for work on Monday. We were fortunate enough to spend another night and relax after a fun day of hiking. Plus it gave my daughter a chance to kick our butts in Mah Jong.
Heading home the next day.
Goodbye Winfield, but the beautiful scenery continues.
