I think I have finally figured out what it is: apparently the water temp sending unit is shorting out. Funny thing, is we pulled the wire from it so it won't continue to short, but for some reason, now the montero will barely start and won't run at all. Step on the gas it dies. Yet, plug in the sending unit to the water temp and everything runs fine. Can someone explain to me why it is happening this way?

Because that wire sends a signal to the engine computer to aid with correct fuel mixture based on engine temp.

Should default to rich/open loop, unless Mitsubishi is real dumb and does something opposite of every other manufacturer during the OBD0/1 era.
