Trailer axle nut mystery

Hi all,

I have a mystery that none of the trailer parts suppliers seem to be able to solve. I bought a utility trailer with wheels that were practically coming off the axle. Here are the facts:

There is no hole in the axle for a cotter pin
There is no flat side for a d-ring

I think I figured it out. If you look at the attached photo, there are 6 cuts in the metal that go down about 1/3 of the nut. What is harder to see is that there is a "tunnel" which goes around the nut into which something like a bicycle cable would fit. I think that there was some type of clamp that went into this channel and tightened the ring so that the steel tabs compressed down onto the axle, holding it in place. The problem is that no supplier seems to have heard of anything like it. If I knew what the damn thing was called, I could probably find one. The alternative is for me to get a castle nut and drill a hole for a cotter pin, which I really don't want to do.

Any ideas or guesses would be welcome.

I've learned something new today. Very interesting that it is a self locker that doesn't fatigue from multiple use. Time for a nap now.
