I just got back from a 8 day 1700 miles trip with the wife and 3 year old son. Saw some amazing places and got the wife hooked on some more remote camping ideas. We stayed in state/national parks and some were good and some were pretty crowded and we both wished for some places with less people. We loaded up the FJ cruiser and dropped off the dog and we were gone.
In the process we talked about what it would take to get us more self contained and a little farther off the beaten path. we talked about selling cars, getting trucks, getting trailers, etc. boiled down to we already have and love the FJ, and we already have a simple 7'x5' utility trailer for carrying dirt bikes. I do a good amount of desert racing so there would be plenty of times we DO need to take it all out.
So where do I begin??? Here are some ideas I want to toss out as far as features for the trailer. I want to incorporate a roof top tent, this would be a nice upgrade to sleeping on the ground. I saw 1 build that had adjustable heights with hydraulic assist to raise and lower the RTT. Thought this would be cool. to have it lowered when Im not trailering bikes, and above the bikes when I am.
I want to be able to carry 2 dirt bikes. Not sure how just yet. simplest way would be toss them in the bed area, but I can make the trailer a bit smaller if I toss one on the front, outside of the box, perpendicular to the hitch. Seems a few of you guys have done this successfully. At the moment I have 1 full size, 2 stroke, but anticipate soon a small bikes for the kid. lightest would go on the front.
I would also like to add a propane tank, tankless water heater, fuel/water tank storage, and other basics.
What do you guys who built trailers for bikes think? Run into any issues? One way better then the other? Anything you wish you thought of/knew of before hand?
I am trying to avoid buying another trailer. But I want what i have to be flexible enough to do fire road type journeys. I dont intend on taking on black diamond trails, but if wanted to head off into the socal desert/mountains I think this would be a better option then a toy hauler or even a tent trailer toy hauler with the platform.
how are you guys with SUVs making 1 trailer do it all?
