trailer/tent idea

You could achieve the similar results by using a Kelty Carport attached to your Overcamp. It's not quite as weather tight as your sketch but it's a flexible low buck solution for more shelter and privacy. Another option would be to get an EeziAwn T-top that already has an annex solution. Given your measurement of a 5' high door and knowing the slope of the Overcamp, your trailer would need to be quite tall. We have mounted the T-top on Chasers with 35" tires and net about a 4.5' tall door opening. The T-top sidewalls require some alterations as their factory length is for vehicle roof height.

Just a note on awning mounting. If you have it on such a tall post as in your sketch, it will need to be extremely stout as the fulcrum effect that happens when bouncing around on the trail can cause metal fatigue in your brackets.

Mario Donovan , thanks for the great reply! I really like the eezi awn with the t-top modified. I think that may be the direction I go. I am also looking into the eezi awn model, have you mounted one of those to a chaser yet? As for the awning mounts I plan on using your actual mount or something similar and just attaching the Hannibal legless awning to it. Thanks again, you info was very helpful.

Mario,
I was just getting ready to order one of the Kelty Carports...however they show a couple different Kelty Carports. One is the design you have pictured here and the other is more of a squared off design with roll up/down sidewalls. I can't seem to find any ordering information for both designs. Anyway...how easy is it to mount the one you have pictured to the Horizon/Overland?

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, Thanks for posting the links

On our way back from the Arctic Ocean Expedition we stopped in Washington state for a camp, one of the fellow there camping with us had the Kelty carport next to his vehicle- it was raining and snowing while we were hanging out - this made it nice to be outside with a group.
I have their sun shelter and it has served us well on the beach for ten years. ;)

Pasquale: Which Kelty Carport version did you see/use? I'll probably just order one and see what comes! Kinda weird how there are 2 apparent unique/different designs...but Kelty doesn't show/differentiate on their website.

Are you coming up to the AT Pyramid lake fest?

You're welcome. We mount EeziAwns up to the 1800 size on the Chaser all the time. The Hannibal legless design will need a bullet proof mount. You might want to consider a Fiamma or EeziAwn instead

The Carport I have has a pole along the mounting edge where I attached it to the tent in the picture. I think Keltys intention was to attach it to factory roof rack bars. In the picture, I used the Velcro loops that are for rolling up the bug net on the Overland tent. Pretty quick & easy. I will bring it along to Pyramid so you can get a good look at it.

It is the one that has very low sides and sits quite low to the ground.

...there is a slim possibility :)

This description makes it sound like you can have the outside edge of the carport up or down. However Kelty states the Carport only comes with 3-poles...and if you were going to set it up with the outside edge up on two poles...that would be 5?

I tried figuring this out recently also, and finally just ordered one. A distinction is that some of the Kelty Carports come with the two poles needed to raise the outside edge. Others don't. So for those (which is the kind I bought), you'd need to buy two poles separately.

Sierra Trading Post has the medium for $139.95 and the large for $169.95.

Thanks! Yeah I...really weird: The Kelty site states the Large Deluxe comes with 6-poles...counting the two outboard/outside poles that allow the tent/awning to be erected so that it is parallel to ground. However a number of retail sites either state it comes with 3 or 4-poles! Gotta love the confusion =8|
