Trailer wiring... the right way... Junction to cleanly tie into?

So the Previous owner just wire tapped off the tail lights. I'm just waiting for this to be an issue. Just look at the connector side....

No good comes from installs like this over time. I want to redo this the right way... On my chevy Dually there was a wire junction weather pack under the vehicle. The shop had cleanly wired the trailer lights into that. Is there a junction like that I can tie into on the Sport? 2001... I can make a custom adapter harness if need be from junkyard wiring bits... I just need a junction...

I looked on youtube and saw this abomination... really this is a custom install. Good grief... :( Or have my standards become to high?

I did however see this... it says its for a montero... will it work on the sport?

Their "sport" option seems to be a universal. BLAH!

So I was searching on montero sport connectors....

Like this junction right by the grommet. If this exists on the sports I can cut the connector out on both sides and use it to make a custom harness adapter... ???

Or if I can find the correct connector to tie to the taiil light connector like this

Yeah I was not impressed with the scotch locks on either. Universal kit... only thing you can get from etrailer. Unless I want to chance the full size that has nice connectors that plug in.

The video of the 2000 monty install kit.... just shut the wires in the back hatch door.... uh no.

Man is that how they ran the wires? I didnt watch the entire video. Yeah I wouldn't ever do that either.

Universal kit is the only thing for the sport, the ones listed for a montero sport plug in play are really for a montero only and do not fit (if you find one let me know but I tried). I have been through an install twice on my sport; once as a super fast install right before moving and this last method which has been by far the most reliable. I basically spliced/soldered/heatshrinked into the factory harness behind the rear plastic quarters on both sides. Then ran the wiring through the black plastic grommet in the lower left hand corner of the rear plastic quarter (sorry no pic but you can see it at 1:22 in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkHhwZ2Vqmk&feature=youtu.be.) I pulled the wiring through leaving just the plug hanging out of the grommet. I keep this capped and then run an extension out of the liftgate just like the video. I know it's scary (I was realllllllllllllly concerned about it) but in reality there is plenty of room with how thick the weather strip is back there. This keeps the wiring out of the elements and is really quite slick. Worked awesome for thousands of towing miles so I'm convinced.
