Trails.com?

Anybody here have a membership to Trails.com? I've been looking over their site and so far I'm impressed. I've signed up for the 14-day free trial but I'm not planning any trips in the next two weeks so I'm not really going to be able to compare what the website says to the actual trails themselves.

I have a membership there. One of the cool things they have if you are a member is the ability to print sections of Charles Wells and Peter Masseys guide books. I am planning a trip to Utah and it was cheaper to pay for Trails.com than purchase all the trail guides for Utah and Arizona.

I have been using it for a long time, very nice way to find 4wd trails, then hiking trails nearby where I am traveling and save it all digitally on the laptop and not have to mess with paper.

The price of membership is less that 1 guidebook would be.

That was my thought. That fifty bucks really would go a long way. I'm planning on taking a few weeks to travel late this summer and figure it'd be a lot easier to just look something up on there than try to find a guidebook that covers the particular area I might be in.

I had a membership a while back, but I found that for a given region, most of the trails seem to be scans from 1-2 guide books. Since I already had the Wells/Massey books, it was of marginal use to me. I used it to identify a few hiking trails, but was generally disappointed, again finding that purchasing the original book was a lot more convenient and netted about the same or better end result.

Just my two cents... If you're really all over the country and looking mainly for hiking stuff (as opposed to 4wd) then it seems like it may be worth it.

Here on the Eastcoast it had a whole lot of info on mountain bike trails and that sort of thing. Not many good driving trails though. I guess it depends on where you are.

It is a pretty decent site. I have had a subscription for years and found it worth the money. It is basically a conglomeration of lots of different guide books, so you are at the mercy of which book they are using for a certain area. I have found some of the trails have a great amount of detail, while others are more vague. I pulled up Michigan and found very little. No off-road trails at all that I came across. But then again, having lived in Michigan most of my life, I know that organized off road trails aren't all that common. If I lived in Michigan and wanted trail guides, I probably wouldn't bother.
