Transmission issues with my '95

Hello, I thought I'd ask here before heading to the transmission mechanics. I have a 95 with 189K miles, good tires, stock everything. Over winter in the cold the beast didn't like going into reverse when cold starting. I parked carefully. I'd been told it was a temperature thing, that the cold made the fluid not work right and on a few suggestions I drained the tranny and put in Lucas Trans Fix. It helped a little. Now though, it's hot here in NM, 90F mostly, and it's getting worse. The engine races but doesn't engage, similar problems/ sounds even driving on the highway, it seems to race but make no difference to speed or traction. Does that make sense?

I've read and researched the issues. It sounds like a common problem in the 2nd gen Runners. The suggestions were to replace the three selenoids after draining and dropping the tranny plate. Another talked of an adjustment to a sensor? I don't know auto transmissions at all so it's all beyond me.
I guess my question is what should I ask the mechanics to do? Or is this something a somewhat practical but beginner mechanic can do at home?

Hey Tanglefoot, Thanks for the link. It seems it's a common problem. I took it in to a local and well respected tranny shop in Santa Fe. He checked it out and replaced some fluid saying it would help for 6-12 months, I guess it's an additive like the Lucas stuff I used in winter. His long term prognosis was that the seals are shot given its age and mileage. 1995/ 191k miles. He said he'd need to rebuild it for $3500 to $4500!...Yikes. Any thoughts anyone?

Perhaps you could find a used, low mileage unit that could be transplanted in and save a lot of money. I'm afraid he's probably correct: The tranny is on its way out.

If it were my truck, I would swap in a 5 speed manual. Those 3.0's are not known for their power and the A340 trans sucks up what little power there is. A manual trans would be a very easy swap and much nicer to drive.
