Trinity Site, New Mexico

Took a trip to the Trinity Site this weekend. This is the site of the worlds first atomic bomb explosion. This test took place on what is now known as White Sands Missle Range in the New Mexico desert. The site is a National Historical Site and is marked by a Lava Rock monument. The site is only open for tours twice per year.

Here are a couple of pictures from the tour. Full trip report can be found here: http://lovin-our-life.blogspot.com/2009/10/trinity-site-new-mexico.html

Above is the McDonald farm house where the Plutoniun core was assembled and the Monument marking Ground Zero of the explosion.

A visitor brought out this restored Army truck, didn't get a chance to talk to him about it before he had to leave.

Is the site open year round, or only certain dates? I've always wanted to go there.

That's pretty neat. I have visited the site in Hiroshima that was ground zero for the end result of what got started there in NM. It is nothing but a plaque mounted to a wall on a busy side street. (the actual Peace Park from the bombing is a couple blocks away) Amazing how a place that had seen such incredible destruction unleashed can be visited again.

Will have to try and get out there for one of their tour days. Thanks for sharing.

That looks like a Dodge WC-53 3/4 ton Carryall. Used quite a bit during WWII as a "crew bus" for aircrews. One of my favorite pieces of old iron!
