Awesome! Wish we could get the Triton in North America. Unfortunately, the Big 3 enjoy political protection from such competition, here.

Got more pictures, mate?

Such an awesome rig. I haven't bought a brand new vehicle since 1996, but those Tritons are on the short list of not-available-in-the-US models I would happily go into debt to own. Brilliant trucks. They win all kinds of awards down under, too, don't they? Is your GLXR running the 4M41 diesel?

Man. It's just THE light truck I'd want to buy new, ya know? Can't wait to see more pictures up close and personal.

Awesome. It would be really nice to get a modern Mitsu diesel on this continent. Unfortunately, the United States government says Mitsubishi trucks are unsafe and environmentally damaging until they are at least 25 years old. Meanwhile, they offer a US$7500 subsidy on the purchase of a Chevy Volt, which - in most parts of this country - is plugged into a coal-fired electrical grid.

Yeah. I'm a little bitter. Here's to 4WD and Freedom. The world is too incredible a place to let the politicians ruin it.

Awesome build. Love the low profile roof rack.

Yeah it's really too bad Mitsu wasn't willing to bring these in, test/modify them to meet safety and emissions standards and sell them. But then again, they've unfortunately never been among the top tier of vehicle manufacturers for American buyers so from a business perspective it was probably the right choice for MMNA.

"the Big 3 enjoy political protection from such competition"

Right, as a result of the Chicken Tax, an extra import duty of 25% that was added to light trucks in 1963. The tax was added in response to France imposing a stiff duty on American poultry products. To avoid the 25% tax, auto makers can build the vehicles here, or import them as kits, and assemble them here.

The Chicken Tax applies to USA manufacturers if they try to import a vehicle they build in another country. For the Transit Connect, which is manufactured in Turkey, Ford does an end run around the tax. Ford imports all Transit Connects as SUVs by adding glass side windows and a second row of seats. The import tax on SUVs is 2.5%. Once in USA, Ford replaces the windows with steel panels, and removes the seats, converting the SUV back into a van.

A similar strategy was employed by Subaru. In the 1980s, Subaru made a small pickup. By adding seats and seatbelts to the truck bed, Subaru was able to import the truck as a passenger car called the Brat.

Crazy, no?

Isn't so much Mitsubishi being unwilling to bring them in; especially given the American penchant for full-sized trucks and SUVs in the last decade. The problem is the "Chicken Tax" imposed on foreign light trucks in the 60s, which the Big 3 in Detroit have consistently lobbied to keep in place. Triton has been winning awards all over the south Pacific for years. Only reason it's not in the United States is because of anti-competitive protectionism. 25% tax on them would make that AUD$60k Pajero Platinum down under retail for upwards of US$75k. Nobody would ever buy that.

But we yanks go nuts for the RHD grey market cars, don't we? ;)

EDIT: Haven beat me to it! Ritsugyo Boeki!
