Triton may be built in Illinois

In conversation at the Detroit Auto Show, Mitsubishi's CEO for North America said the company is considering building the Triton pickup (also called the L200) at its plant in Illinois. The plant is currently operating at less than 10% capacity.

The Triton is built in Thailand today, and sold in many parts of the world, including Europe. Mitsubishi could construct the Triton in USA, and export to markets in South America and Europe.

In world markets, the Triton competes on equal footing with the Toyota HiLux, the Nissan Nararra and the Isuzu D-Max. Here's a review with photos of the 2010 Triton, as sold in Australia

The Triton is available as a two door cab and chassis, and as a four door pickup. The engine provided to most markets is a 2.5L turbodiesel that produces about 300 lb-ft of torque. Mitsubishi also sells the Triton with a 2.4L gasoline engine. Either engine is available with 5 speed manual or 5 speed auto transmission.

I think this would be a good move for Mitsubishi in North America.
The L200/Triton is a very good truck, I'm actually getting one in the next year or so. Just need to get rid of my Chrysler minivan first.

fingers crossed

I guess the big question is whether we'd get the diesel or not. That new 2.5 is a great powerplant, much different from my old 4D56. If the Triton was built with a diesel in NA, I might consider switching back to the left hand side to drive my vehicle again! :coffeedrink:

Here in South Africa the Triton is available with the following engines:
  • 2.5 TD (4d56) with SuperSelect transfer
  • 3.2 Di-D TD (4m41) with EasyShift Transfer
  • 3.5 petol V6 (6g7*) with EasyShift Transfer

If I could get my hands on a 4M41 I would never need another rig... well, as long as that one lasted anyway. ;) My bet is IF we ever get it, it'll be the gas version only. We never got any mitsu diesels (non-Fuso I mean) past the 4D55 in the Ram/Ranger. I had to import my old 4D56 and my current 4M40 with my JDM Pajeros.

But you never know...

The super-select t-case is great but could use a deeper low range from the OEM.

The super swoop box sides will not sell here.

Just because they build it here doesn't mean they will sell it here. These may all be for Export.

I love how it looks, better than any of the pick ups sold in the US right now and would hope they offer the TD engine. I would think with the way gas prices are going it would be a smart choice.
