Truck question...

Thinking seriously about getting a double cab diesel truck to use as the "family wagon". I need a full bench seat upfront and in the back to fit 2 adults and 4 kids. We are hardly ever going somewhere all together so I am not worried about fuel mileage, well, OK, sort of, I want a diesel for pulling power, etc. It will NOT be a DD since we are rarely all going the same place at once.

So I guess I have two questions:
1 - which diesel engine is better? Ford, Chevy, or Mopar? Not looking at the brand new ones, something a few years old.
AND
2 - which of the Big 3 has a more comfy cab design to accommodate all 6 of us?

Thanks!
Steven

Yikes...

I was raised in a Toyota family, but we always had a larger domestic vehicle. In our experience all of the diesel Fords and Dodges have treated our family well. Because I am primarly biased towards Toyota, the only advice I can give to you is to look at the aftermarket products and upgrades you would want to outfit the vehicle you select. There are still some Chevy's out there that do not yet have lift kits or suspension support, and some other small issues similar to that, so think of how you would like to upgrade your vehicle and see if there is aftermarket support for that vehicle.

I would say engine choice it would be the cummins in the dodge. To fit 6 people the ford is a bigger truck and might fit the fam better. I would say take the fam all together and actually sit in a truck to see. I would not go with the chevy tho.

I will assume you realize none of the OEM's you mentioned make there own diesel engines today. GM's Duramax is built by a joint venture with Izuzu and was developed by Isuzu. The older 6.2 and 6.5 engines were designed mostly by Detroit Diesel personnel on loan to Chevrolet. The Ford is an International Harvester (Navistar) engine, built by Navistar. The Dodge used engine is a Cummins 6BT series (now ISB-the latest 24 valve design). The design parameters for each were entirely different and any direct comparison is invalid because of this. All 3 are very good for the originally intended purpose. All will give generally acceptable fuel milage, all accept alternative fuel, such as B100 biodiesel, acceptably well, and all have parts availability equally well in North America.

NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) are quite different, depending on the specific application and engine. The Dodge, being (all models of the Cummins used in the Dodge) direct injection engines, is generally the noisiest ENGINE, but the interior percieved noise is about the same for all 3. Outside the truck, the Dodge is noisier.

Ultimate durability will go to the most simple design, since durability is a direct function of the total number of PARTS in the engine. In this case, the Cummins in the Dodge (the 12 valve version) is the simplest design and the most durable.

For day to day drivability, the GM 6.2 and 6.5 are the most "gasoline engine like" in the power level and torque curve.

In a crew cab design, the Ford is dimensionally the largest (not including the latest versions of each manufacturer), measured by the SAE interior standards in SAE J1100, but the proportions of each varies enough so that you must try each one to check out these differences yourself.

Thanks!

Sure, but why wait for a truck that may or may not be on the way?

If you decide to opt for a new Tundra in a few years, then your used truck will still be worth X amount for resale.

If they need one now, it won't be an option, but I noticed that they have had Toyotas. If they are able to wait, they can have another Toyota with a diesel. Toyota has delivered when they have made announcements in the past, so I don't think that "may not" is part of this equation.

It looks like the CrewMax will seat 6 with the 40/20/40 Bench Seat. I have not personally verified this, but bench seats typically allow for 3 in the front.

I own 2 Duramax GM's and love them!!!! IMO, they have the nicest interior and ride. Also, the Allison tranny is amazing!!!!

I only hear of problems with the 6.0 FORD and the new FORD engine is on some sort of Recall as well. I would never buy one. You could go with an older 7.3 liter, but the trannys are junk compared to 2008 standards....I have 2001 F-450, 7.3 liter.....nice truck, but the GMC 2500HD D-Max, Allison tows better, stops better and rides nicer. The only thing the F-450 has over the GMC is Payload.

My next truck will possibly be a Dodge because of no thrills, heavy duty, solid axle frontend, ground clearance, work truck style. The new tranny's are checking out similar to the Allison.

I have never had a Toyota. My main concern is that there is enough room inside for all of us. My wife doesn't need to know what tranny is better, etc... ok, but I do!:shakin:

Wait, I did have a Toyota once... a Camry, hated it. Handling was awful.:sport_box
