Hey all, new guy here. I bought a 03 Frontier CC LB. I want to build a pretty ************ hauler/camper out of the truck that will be able to haul most or all my gear when I go on month long outtings in the desert or in the mountains. I really just need some help with ideas on how to accomplish this from people who already have.

Gear I am hauling:
Two Downhill/Freeride bikes
Snowboard + gear
Yakima Sky Box 12 (gear for 4!) <--rockclimbing equipment and alpine backpacking gear in here
67 lb Boxer-Katahula dog dog thats a complete BAMF
Enough room to sleep at least two

...I can't afford a Adventure Trailer just yet, but teh Horizon is on my mind.

The trucks a 2WD with an LSD, Im not planning on wheeling, but rather just getting me from A-B...through Z and back. However, I am planning on doing a small lift and some 31's for now...until I can afford a full Chaos Long Travel kit...but then it will be my full on satelitte guided road missle for epic epic fun, instead of just awesomeness to the max.

This is the 4th Nissan I have owned and I love 'em all!

I'm selling my dirtbike to help get the tent quicker, but where would I find that mounting cage thats in the picture he has the tent mounted to? This way I can carry my bikes on the roofrack and gear in the skybox upfront on the roofrack with some yakima add-ons and keep my pooch in the bed under the tent. I can make some canvas side and rear rolls with some snaps to attach it to keep him comfy ove long hauls.

What do ya'll think? Any clearance issues with this idea? Thank you all so much for the information so far, and that link to expedition portal is great; thats where i found this picture.

Also, another idea is to get a softopper, install that then have a contractors rack setup outside of that like an exo-skelaton, then have the rooft tent on top of that...

Thoughts from you pros?

Not a pro by any means, but that was what I was thinking when I was reading your post. Wouldn't be too hard to make the outer rack too, if your looking to save cash.

Hi Xterrain ! I have an 03 Xterra & assure you if you do a small lift you can fit 33s easily if you go for a 33x10.5R15 (I'm assuming you have the 15 inch wheels) you'll get better fuel consumption numbers & a great look to boot!
But those tires will be more expensive!

I've seen a few pick-ups with the canvas on the back & love the look !

Go for it !

You have a great platform for all your exploration needs !

I am in agreement with Xterrain and Eglaisi. My bother had folding soft top with a simple custom Exo skeleton type setup over the top of it, and it was very functional. Loads cheaper than a flip pac or like camper for those of us who are frugal and/or cheap .....or poor :)
