Ultimate Base Camp Trailer

I've been looking for a nice light weight trailer that I can use for base camp for my family and I think I found it. Now to see if I can get one into the USA. What do you guys think?

It looks interesting but I couldn't tell what the specific suspension design was. You really want an independant suspension if possible. The other challenge I found when looking at off road camping trailers from South Africa or Austrailia was the 240V electrical systems. Significant redesign and fitting is required to switch to the US 110V system.

The two companies I found that have taken care of that challenge and are importing US version are Safari Trailers and King Kampers.

I personaly own one of the King Kamper trailers and love it. One other advantage of these trailers is that they close up to a low profile with less wind drag than the one you linked to. Check em out and see what you think.

While Safaritrailers.com is alive and well the company went out of business about 4 years ago. Around that time the US Dollar weakened against foreign currency and basically doubled the price of imported trailers overnight. This has been an on going issue for importers but has been a boon for people like us who export.

The major issues with importing trailer are that they must meet DOT and NHTSA regulations to be sold here. Individuals can not import their own trailers unless they go through a Registered Importer and there are only about 3 companies who deal with trailers and they deal exclusively with big rigs.

King Kamper and Campa USA are the only two who import and have stock of foreign made trailers as far as I know. There are a couple of other "companies" who will arrange for a trailer to be shipped to the USA for you, best be careful when dealing with them, if they are not recognized by the DOT and NHTSA the imported trailer is subject to re export or destruction.

CampaUSA manufacturers their trailers, derived from the original Campa South African design, in Ohio. Some of their very original models were made in the RSA, but I believe everything is currently U.S.-built. Plus some of Chris Cole's improvements over the original are significant, particularly the trailer's upgraded axle, hubs, and brakes.

Well, there ya go....from a man in the business that knows what he's talking about. I didn't know that Safari Trailers went out of business. Makes sense though with the significant change in exchange rates. Thanks for the update.

thanks for the info guys , very helpful. I think I found a simpler solution with the chaser trailer and a hannibal jumbo kit. I'm going to work up some drawing and I'll post my idea's.
