Ultimate crazy old jeep adventure.....

What would be your ultimate adventure in an old flat fender jeep?

I'm getting totally excited about getting my recently rebuilt version on some remote dusty track somewhere.....

My most crazy idea is to drive my 70 year old ( yet lightly modified :sombrero: ) Willys MB from the Mexico border to the Canadian border all on dirt roads!

Now, I know its been tried and done, but I still think it would be the trip of a lifetime, especially in something as basic as an old Willys flat fender. I have seen that people do it on motorcycles......and a flat fender is basically kinda like a motor cycle with 4 tires......

Anyways.....crazy idea?

Yeah its a crazy idea, I will be in the nice padded cell right next to yours. I have a M38 I will have going by summer to do crazy stuff like that in. I keep thinking how much fun it would be to do the Maya rally in my flatty. Ohhh here come the nice men in the white coats with a special jacket for me to wear.:victory:

I'd join you too, if my "Go Devil" powered buggy was finished.

The slippery slope you mentioned in your build thread.......

Crazy? Yeah a couple times in my life I have been called crazy. Personally if I had the chance I would point that thing a different direction and go south instead of north at the Mexico border. Go through copper canyon, stick to dirt roads down to Guatemala maybe go through Belize and down to panama. Why? Because the continental divide while being awesome will probably not change your life. You have experience off-road in the USA so it wouldn't be that far different just longer and more of a good thing. I would be willing to bet that a few months in Central America would change your point of view on life if not your approach in general. You would have awesome trails, a whole different culture and society to explore and plenty of experiences that no one could predict. Don't believe all the hype on danger, just be smart and anywhere is safe but you have to listen to locals and keep your wits about you. You did ask for crazy, and I think that short of shipping that jeep to africa, asia or south america that central america is the most interesting and different experience available with the added bonus that it is relatively accessible. If you want "once in a liftetime" then go south.

CDT would be quite awesome though. So would the Trans America trail. Go up to alaska perhaps?

Not sure if it would fit but I'd do the Trans-Am trail in it. Supposedly only around 100 miles of paved road. Overall the important thing is just go SOMEWHERE in it! lol! Maybe keep a record of all the major trails its seen and survived.?. Following the Explorers route West could be neat. To bad the Appilachian trail isn't allowed...that could be cool too. :)

Every picture I have ever seen of the TAT has been two track. A bit of mud in places and it might get tight in colorado but that should be easy to work around if needed. I'm sure it would be doable. Advrider.com has lots of ride reports and expierence on the TAT and CDT so I'm sure someone in their planning thread could answer the question of "would a completely redesigned old MB jeep fit down this trail?".

Yeah the appalachian trail is neat. I am thinking about hiking that this summer.

I think I have read a few reports of people doing the TAT in a 4 wheel vehicle. I don't think there is very much, if any, single track?

For an old open top jeep.....pacific coast highway during the right time of year could be awesome!

I just can't wait to get out and do something in my old clunker. I need to figure out how to get more time off work!
