universal camping box?

I'm in the process of designing and or buying a 4x4 camper. We all like the earthroamer but its pricy. Does anyone make a universal shell? that can be fitted to a 1 ton to 2 ton 4x4 chassis? it seems like ther might be a market.
Is every shell pretty much custom? I was looking for something large with possibly a hydraulic top. Any thoughts?

By "1 or 2 ton 4x4 chassis" do you mean a bare frame? I don't think I have seen a generic box for a bare chassis, but you could look at ATCO units, which come in all sizes and are sometimes available on the second hand market following big construction projects, or short over-the-road containers, and build your own mounts.

Look on the mil surplus side. There are plenty of heavy metal boxes, usually Radio Boxes, that are for sale... Or, you could look at a smaller Connex Box....

Most of the military boxes are HEAVY. The radio box on my M109 weighs about 4000lbs empty. It's built hell-for-stout, but that's a lot of weight to haul around for no good reason if you ask me (unless you get one with a deuce and a half attached to it).

They do custom stuff. I always daydream when I see a work bed on a power company truck --- I imagine it with a lift, 37's, bumpers, winch, and one of these toppers...
