Up the Gros Ventre

I spent two nights looking for fish and camping in what is essentially my backyard, the Gros Ventre(pronounced Grow Vont) mountains. Most of the other rivers in the area are still pretty blown out. But there is one creek that runs clear earlier than most and is sprinkled with brookies and fine spotted cuttthroats.

Oh my god....i know exactly what you mean.....tell me how much fun you had? To much? or could you handle it w/ a cast iron pan and butter?
Hey if that pan gets too heavy I'll be in Colorado next spring and I could shoot up north and help w/ the heavy lifting

I caught only 2 tiny brookies. But the scenery made up for the mediocre catch. I saw tons of wildlife, antelope, elk, osprey, eagles, pelicans, and a long-tailed weasel that kept me amused for the better part of an hour. This whole area is bordered by wilderness area with many trailheads leading to pristine lakes and other points of interest. I headed out just in time to avoid the 4th of July "crowds".

Thanks for sharing! Looks like good times

I was debating taking this route on the way to Beartooth next week but wasn't quite sure what was out there. Might have to check it out :coffeedrink:

Wow....Worth any price huh. sometimes experiences are worth more then money. Like watching a weasel for an hour is so cool. what have you done this year huh? That had to be so cool.
As i get older and sick the past 3 years...(soon to been reversed I hope) I find simple things like weasels very important.....damned.... why didn't i spent more time watching before?
I sometimes think that when I was young money wasn't important. so Why the HELL didn't I go to Africa ? Geeez

Just town square!?

Try running a heavily service based busniess here...time is money. When it takes an hour to do a 20min drive...well, lets just say it can be frustrating.

Glad you got some peaceful time this weekend. I am flat out with work so no time for fish or fun.

You ever follow the Gros Ventre all the way? You used to be able to take it all the way to Dubois. Been over 10yrs since I have done it though....

Or how about up the Greys? You can follow that road all the way to La Barge or Cokeville depending on which way you go.....makes for a nice weekend of driving, camping, fishing and exploring.

Money is still not very important....what are you going to do grow old and die with a huge pile of it under the matress!?

You are never to old to go to Africa or anyplace for that matter. Never to old to do new things, see new places and meet new people! It just comes down to what is important to each of us in life....if that is the new truck, house payment and kids college money. Well then, I guess Africa will be waiting a few more years!

Nice photos Bugspray! That is a great area. My cousin used to be a fly fishing guide for the Gros Ventre Ranch... love that drive in. He had it made with that gig!

Gros Ventre goes all the way through to Dubois? I recall riding in as far as we could and the trail petered out around Sunday Peak and some private ranches...? We were on a, "Where does the road end?" day trip and didn't have good local maps with us... maybe we missed a turn..?

The Greys River is a fantastic trip! I did that one a few years ago on the 4th of July, starting in Kemmerer and followed it up to Alpine. Great views of the Salt River Range, fun water crossings and huge fields of wildflowers, as you watch the Greys 'grow'.

I'm very interested in taking Union Pass from west of Dubois, all the way south to Pinedale. Been wanting to do that one for years now... Are we finally getting enough WY members here on Expo to consider a local overnighter for that trip? Heavy grizzly country up there, but I imagine it's beautiful country...

Lets do it!! Everytime I look at that area on a map I think "it looks possible, why not?" you just cross the river and head up toward Union Pass right? I've been to the "end" of the road but there is no reason you just couldnt keep going.

Yeah the Greys is real nice too....I caught some hefty trout up in there. That valley is so cool. I've never driven that road to its conclusion, what do you do in Cokeville besides get gas and turn around?

KCOWYO....just let me know when!

I was in this area over the weekend..well kind of. We were camping on the Green between LaBarge and Big Piney. I did get up in that area somewhat in my travels though. Love that country.

I love the Alpine to Cokeville (or vise versa) route taking the Greys river road. I travel it at least once a year. The 3 tri state marker is near Cokeville and that's cool to check out as well.

Not inviting myself or anything but if you guy's put together a trip in this area I'd love to tag along! :bike_rider:
