USAL Road, CA.

this week, well Sun through Fri, my family took my new 2007 jeep and my 1945 Bantam for a camping trip. 75 miles was in the dirt up USAL Road. I got to break in my new tent that I mounted on top of my trailer. Don't worry the trailer was not harmed. it is just a home made tonno cover that I designed to ride on top of the trailer and clamp on to the top rail and is locked on using the tie down brackets. Here are some of the pictures.

Usal rd. accronym for USA Lumber. it was a major road that connected highway 1 to eureka.USA Lumber was the company that ran a harbor out of Usal beach. The road was to remote to build HWY 1 on. if you look at the map where HWY 1 peels away from the coast to connect to HWY 101. Usal rd. continues up the coast. it is easy in the summer. fall and winter may be unpassable. it is not maintained but the FS grades it once a year? it was pretty rutted in spots. great trip. camping right on the beach away from all the tourest traps. see the picture of my son carying his fishing pole? in the background are 4 elk. wow it was a great spot. If you google usal rd you will find more info on it. Takes 4 hrs to get to from Sacramento. The area is refered to the lost coast. Great hiking out of the area.

Cool!

Glad you had a good time!
Did you stay at Usal Beach the entire time? It was a little on the crowded side when we drove through.
Did you drive the entire route up to Ferndale? Or go out via the road to Shelter Cove?

Great piece of history about the road and its name too. Learn something new everyday...

Do you have any pics of your trailer cover or did you already post that in your other thread?

there were no crowds. maybe only 5 sites occupied. It was a stratigic move to show up sun night. on monday we moved to the beach site in the picture. we stayed at the beach 2 nights then took the first half of usal rd. made camp and ate dinner in shelter cove. Worst clam chowder I ever had was there. not impressed with shelter cove. Then we looped back around and finished usal rd and came out in the big trees and spent a night there. to crowded for my tastes. last day we drove back down hwy 1 to fort Bragg. didn't really like that town either. to touristy for my tastes. my wife wanted to take our son on the train so we rode the train before heading home. Great trip. wish I had stayed more days at the beach and hit some hikeing. but 2 yr olds don't like to hke much and I left his backpack at home. dough.

I will post details on the trailer in the trailer section. I have not taken any detailed shots yet. but will today.

Great pics! I just got back from exploring the Lost Coast. What a beautiful place! Can't wait to get my wife and the 4x4 up there.

FWIW- I got lost (GPS doesn't work under the thick tree canopy) on a trail in the woods and ran into some folks who weren't too happy to have me in their neighborhood. I believe they were involved in an "agricultural" endeavor (wink, wink). I've done lots of camping/exploring over the past 20 years and it was one of the sketchiest situations I've experienced. Just a heads-up. ;)

Man, I am glad I didn't have any run in with the locals. my wife would not have been happy meeting with local "farmers". We did get some nasty looks from some hippy folk though. I guess a jeep that looks like a hummer pulling a trailer was creating to much carbon for their tastes. I actually passed a prius on usal rd. I told them they should get a hummer, I got nasty looks. But I was fishing for them.
