looking to get into more options with my photography. i feel like ive maxed out the potential on my p&s. i like messing with the settings too much and want more. but i dont need to explain my self to yall. im sure you understand :coffeedrink:

anyway before i drop some big bucks on camera gear im wanting to try out some used stuff so i can learn what i like and dont like. ive used a friends Canon T3 a few times and really liked it. are there any places online that sell used camera gear? ive searched ebay and craigslist pretty good. there arent any places local to me that deal with it.

TIA

I still shoot mostly film but have been using my DSLR too. I am one of those Pentax shooters and love them and will shoot them over any of the other more major brands. Buying used is a good option. Being a film shooter about 70% of the time, most of my bodies have to be bought used. My suggestion, find what you are interested in that is within your price range and jump onto one of the brand specific forums. Youll find better bodies that are probably better taken care of because they wouldve been used by enthusiasts rather than the random person on eBay. Something like Pentaxforums.com

Check either the Canon Photography on the Net Forum (POTN) or check out Fred Miranda Forum. Both have a buy/sell thread that has anything and everything you're looking for. You have to be a member on the forums to see the buy/sell thread

This is how we buy and sell all our equipment. You'll save thousands over buying brand new and I've never been burnt by any equipment we've bought

I was in the same boat as you, and started looking for a DSLR. I ended up buying a Nikon D70 (with case, extra batteries and memory cards) from a member here for a great price. The camera works perfectly and I've learned a ton, just shooting and messing with settings. I went for Nikon, because I have a few friends with them and they'll let me borrow different lenses. :) Good luck with your search.

I'd try KEH.com. They are the biggest and still the best source for used equipment IMO, they even offer a 6 month warranty on the used equipment that they sell. They're rating of equipment is pretty spot on too. Like new really means like new.

im thinking about now buying a used camera body and new glass. ive found a few bodies in the $350 range. and that would leave me about $300 for glass. is that a good starting point?

$300 for new lenses? Dont think that is going to be enough. You might be able to pick up a single, walk around lens (like a 50mm or smaller) but probably not a good telescopic.

I 2nd the recommendation for KEH. I've purchased quite a few things from them, and have never been disappointed.

Something I've done that you might consider is purchasing older lenses that were made for film cameras, then buying an adapter that allows them to be used on newer digital cameras. I have a bunch of legacy Canon lenses that I'm using on my Micro 4/3 digital camera. These old lenses tend to be pretty inexpensive, and the glass it top rate.
