Value of a Series II and III

2005PW

Observer
I've just started looking for a LR and came across a 1960 Series II 88 petrol. The aid reads that it runs but needs work, asking $5,000.

The other (same person selling) is a 1973 Series III 88 petrol. This one says it runs good (new weber carb) low mileage vehicle. Asking $6,000.

These are about 4 hours away from me so I haven't seen them yet. My question is, assuming these are in average condition for their age, are the prices reasonable and worth the drive to look at?

Thanks gang.

You don't mention anything about rust and for LR this vintage, that can be a huge problem and a big difference in price...

As an apples to apples investment a Series II will always be worth more than a III. Both look like they need work but restored classic Land Rovers carry a significant premium. $5000-$6000 price tag is reasonable for a running driving vehicle as long as the chassis, bulkhead isn't rusted out and the unit is complete not requiring you to hunt down expensive items. Although if they are not actively used on the road I would like a $4000-$5000 price tag better.

As a rule of thumb, just by the best unit you can afford.

If you can, bump up your budget and get a Grey market 90. Will be like driving a 88 but actually have decent suspension.

There are some of us that drive older Land Rovers because we choose to, not because we can't afford a newer model.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm partial to the nostalgia of old rigs. Will check them out and look for rust as mentioned
